LESSON 1–CHRIST IN THE OLD TESTAMENT BIBLE STUDY

Christians know that the New Testament teaches us about the Lord Jesus, His life and death,
His work at present, His church and His Second Coming. The Old Testament also says many
things about Christ and we should learn about them as well. We cannot hear too much about theOne we love, the Lord Jesus.

The Holy Spirit inspired God's servants to write the 39 books of the Old Testament, 2 Peter 1:21 - For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

The Spirit does not speak often about Himself, but much about Christ, as the Lord said Hewould do in the New Testament, John 16:14 - He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

All Scripture is for our benefit, 2 Timothy 3:16 - scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, and the Spirit teaches us that we should look forsomething about Christ in the Old Testament as well as the New, 1 Corinthians 10:11 - Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

The Spiritoften used Old Testament verses in the New Testament. This helps us to understand both verses: thefirst in the Old Testament and the other in theNew. We should ask, How does the Spirit explainthese Old Testament verses?

2 Samuel 7:14 - I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:

Would you think that this verse speaks about Christ?

Jehovah promisedDavid that He would be a Father to Solomon. Yet the Spirit was also thinking of Christ, as we knowfrom - Hebrews 1:5 - For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

Look at - Hosea 11:1 - When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

Here again the Spirit in - Matthew 2:15 - And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son, shows that He was thinking aboutChrist in - Hosea 11:1 - When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

The Lord Himself taught that the Old Testament has many things to say about Himself, - Luke 24:27 - And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself; John 5:39 - Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

In this book, we will look for teaching about Christ in two different forms:

  1. Promises - In many verses, God promised that He would send a Saviour for His people.
  1. Pictures - We can also learn about the Lord by considering men or things, which in some way
make us think of Him. Sometimes the Holy Spirit tells us about these pictures, but we can look formore ourselves. However, it is important that we do not build a doctrine on what is only a picturein Scripture.

Often the Holy Spirit carried the writer on beyond his own experience and led him to write things, which could only be true of Christ Himself. We will study someexamples of this and learn moreabout our Saviour.

There are 39 books in the Old Testament in our Bibles and we will look for some promises orpictures in all of them.

GENESIS

THE SUN

In the beginning Jehovah God created the heavens and the earth, - Genesis 1:1- In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth; - Genesis 2:4 - These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

In the NewTestament, we learn that this was God the Son, - John 1:3 - All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made; - Colossians 1:16 - For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him; Hebrews 1:2 - Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

God createdtwo great lights in the sky, the sun and the moon, - Genesis 1:14-18 - And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good; - Psalm 8:3 - When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained.

Christ is called the Sun of righteousness in - Malachi 4:2 - But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall,so the sun is a picture of the LordJesus.

The sun was to rule the day; there is nothing hidden from its heat, - Psalm 19:6 - His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

Christ willcome as King to rule in righteousness over the whole world. He will come with great glory, and thesun is a picture of His glory in - Matthew 17:2 - And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

Trees cannot bear fruit without sunshine,- Deuteronomy 33:14 - And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon, and the Lord helps and protects us in our daily life, - Psalm 84:11 - For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

We may think of the moon as a picture of the church. God's plan is that it should give light tothe world in this age of darkness before the Sun of righteousness comes to rule.

ADAM

God made the earth all ready for man to live in. Then He created Adam out of the dust, and Evefrom part of Adam's body, Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them; Genesis 2:7 - And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul; Genesis 2.22 - And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Adam is a picture of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is called the last Adam and the second Man, - 1 Corinthians 15:45,47 - And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.

Adam is the head of the human race, of all men. The Lord Jesus is the Headof all true believers. We are all born as descendants of Adam. All true believers are born againthrough the work of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have by our first birth the nature of Adam. By thesecond birth, we have the nature of God, and the Spirit is seeking to make us more like the LordJesus, - Romans 8:29 - For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren; - 2 Peter 1:4 - Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Again, we can see Eve as a picture of the Church, the Bride of Christ. God put Adam in a deepsleep when He made Eve a suitable helper for him, - Genesis 2:21-22 - And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

So the Lord Jesus went throughthe "sleep" of death so that God could prepare His Bride for Him. Christ loved the Church and gaveHimself for her, - Ephesians 5:25 - Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.

THE FIRST PROMISE

Satan took the form of a snake and lied to Eve. So sin entered God's new creation and He had
to punish the sinners. But God promised Adam and Eve that they would have a son and he would
crush the snake's head, Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. This is the first promise in the Bible that God would send a Man to defeat Satan and to savepeople from their sins.

The Saviour has come and has gained the victory over Satan, - Luke 4:13 - And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season; Luke 10:18 - And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven; Romans 16:20 - And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen; Revelation 20:2 - And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years; Revelation 20:10 - And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

In Genesis, we see how God chose men who would be the ancestors of the Lord Jesus Christ:

And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim. And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. Genesis 25:1-4.

And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
