(Affirmative) / Technical / The definition of position weld is not clear. This needs to be redefined as perhaps as" out of position welding" wherein the welder is required to weld not only horizontal but vertical and overhead as well.

(Negative) / position welding definition / Technical / This difinition allows the pipe to be rotated while the weld is being made. It only means that the pipe cannot be rotated WHILE the weld metal is being deposited. This definition does not keep the pipe from being rotated. If you refer to Figure 1-Sample Procedure Form, where it indicates "Position" you could simply enter "YES." Using this definition a company could qualify a weld as a position weld and do all the welding in the top quarter or at least near the top (see paragraph 5.3.2.8 Position 19th ed. This may not represent the true "positions" that the procedure could be applied to. If this definition is changed then an additional definition of "fixed position" as referenced in paragraph 6.2.1 General and paragraph 6.3.1 General should be added to the difinitions section. "Fixed Position" is not defined in paragraph 3.2 Definitions 19th ed. The Figure 2-Sample Coupon Test Report also has a reference to "Weld Position ----Roll----Fixed. / I recommend changing the term in the current sub-paragraph 3.2.8 to "fixed position welding" and the definition changed as follows: "fixed position welding: Welding in which the pipe or assembly is held stationary as the weld metal is being deposited and until the weld is completed." Or add a definition of "fixed position" as it is used in paragraph 6.2.1 General and paragraph 6.3.1 General.
A definition of "fixed position" is not included in the definitions but the "fixed position" is referenced in the text of the 1104.
