Healthy Growth and Development Task Force Meeting Minutes

Participants present:

  1. ASQ Updates; progress towards pilot program for screening at St. John Day Care, availability of online tools, and collaboration with School District.

Cheryl Orlando and Katie Gajeski have met with Karen Erickson to discuss and strategize implementation of the ASQ at St. John Day care as a pilot program. Parent letter and release of information forms have been drafted and are under review. Karen has provided the ages of the toddlers and the number of ASQs needed to Cheryl Orlando.

Cheryl Orlando and Katie Gajeski had a meeting with Ann Molzahn of the Cudahy School District regarding consistent use of the ASQ screening tool and data sharing with the health department. A second meeting is scheduled with Karen Ebbers to discuss this further on May 14th.

The Cudahy Health Department has submitted a pilot program summary on our ASQ project to Brad Holman from the Children and Youth with Special Health Care needs Program of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to be considered for funding to support electronic ASQ tool.

  1. Evaluate Light It Up Blue Autism Awareness activities in April

The Citylit the following buildings blue; City Hall, Library, Fire Stations, water utility. They are unable to light the Water Tower. A banner was placed in front of City Hall. The school district placed blue gels in their entry ways and changed their marques. Local landmarks and buildings to LIUB included; the county MKE letters in the gateway to the airport, US Bank Tower, the Mitchell Park Domes, the Marquette Interchange. Cheryl Orlando reported that approximately 45 residents within Cudahy participated in LIUB. Mayor Hohenfeldt mentioned that he received a number of requests to keep City Hall lit blue year round. Cheryl Orlando is currently writing a document which summarizes this initiative, so it can be continued in the years to come.

  1. Evaluate Bullying Prevention Presentation

The LeRoy Butler program occurred on April 27, 2015 at the Cudahy High School.

A total of 595 (412 Cudahy residents, 183 other communities) tickets were distributed and 318 people were in attendance the night of the event, which is a 53% turnout rate. The night of the event 46 people completed evaluations. All 46 people indicated that they would attend this type of event again. The majority of people completing evaluation indicated they heard about the event through school and Facebook. Some lessons learned from the event were to clearly understand what the speaker would address and include other experts who could provide additional insight on the topic, the best way to reach the students is in school during the school day, reduce number of prizes or modify distribution process utilizing “runners”, and arrange extra volunteers in case needed.

  1. Update from Mayor Hohenfeldt regarding the school curriculum and life skills courses.

The Mayor stated that with the transition of 6th grade to the middle school the School District is exploring adding life skills programing as a part of the curriculum. The current challenge is finding certified staffing to bring on board with the needed expertise and skill sets. Funding may also be a challenge. However, if these issues are overcome this will move forward and be presented to the school board for approval.

  1. Discuss Breast Feeding action and plan No further action has taken place due to work on other initiatives this past month. Cheryl Orlando will be meeting with the WIC staff to discuss this with them in the next two weeks.
  1. Internet Safety Program

In response to a suggestion from the community, we will explore the possibility of an internet safety presentation. Mayor Hohenfeldt will inquire about previous programs presented by the Cudahy Police Department. This is easily organized and would again be a visible event in the community showing action from the HCC.
