Students must have all the books required for this course. Texts or texts' edition may be changed without recourse.

OBJECTIVES: This course intends to give students the fundamentals of Italian language structure. It will train students in the basic skills: listening, speaking and grammar, with some emphasis on reading and writing. Throughout the course the students will become acquainted with many of the cultural themes of Italy. Some taped material and films will be used to supplement the instruction.

STUDENTS' RESPONSIBILITIES: 1) attend class regularly; 2) do the reading as assigned, all reading will be assigned in advance and will be due the following day and must be written out in full; 3) show up for all exams (no makeup unless there is a proven emergency); 4) if you decide to withdraw from the course, do so before or on the deadline (late withdrawals will not be approved without compelling reasons). Last Day to Withdraw with "W" is Tuesday November 4; 5) no cellular phones are allowed during classes.

BASIS FOR EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated on assigned reading and lecture material.

a) Four major exams (including Mid-term and Final) each worth 20%,

b) Classroom participation worth 10%,

c) Language lab and homework assignments worth 5%.

d) Two typed double spaced short paper assignments and oral presentation 5%

Students will be evaluated on the basis of: a) daily homework, b) serious study, c) accurate knowledge, d) quizzes, e) active participation, as oral presentations, comments, questions and attendance (un-excused absences without legitimate documentation will lower your grade).

LANGUAGE LAB. Students in first year language courses are required to spend one hour per week working independently as means to perfect pronunciation and for listening comprehension. Prego! has disks to accompany texts for all first year courses.

EXTRA CREDIT

Students may earn up to two extra credit points by attending the following events:

Language Festival: November 12, 2008 1 extra credit towards the final grade.

Join the Italian Club L'ORA DEL CAFFE' Italian Conversation for everybody meets every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in the Student Center's Cafeteria. (Must attend three in order to gain point)

HANDOUTS on various topics will be used as supplemental aids. These should be integrated into your notes and studied for major tests. This Syllabus is onecampus.

METHODS

1. In the proficiency-oriented communicative classroom there is minimal explanation of grammar rules. Focus is on application and interactive group work. Student must read grammar explanation and do homework prior to class in order to be prepared. Class is taught 90% in Italian.

2. Completion of the most relevant exercises found in the text.

3. Conversation in class based on the vocabulary and grammar learned.

4. Discussion in Italian of questions based on the reader.

5. Talks in Italian by the instructor.

6. Oral reports and discussions on various topics by the student.

7. Diction, especially in the beginning of the course.

8. Audio-visual and supplementary material and activities: films, records, slides, tapes.
