Do your students know that professionallicensure or certification requirements vary from state to state, and by professional organization?

UAB is required* tokeep all current online students, applicants, and prospective students informed as to whether each program meets state licensing requirements in the state where the applicant resides. (Note that if a student can complete supervised field experiences outside Alabama, that student would be considered online for this purpose.)

The UAB State Authorization office is working to develop a publicly-accessible database to provide this information online for every program in each state. In the meantime, the following information will help keep our students informed:

  1. A statement posted on websites notifying current students and potential students that licensure requirements vary from state to state, and by professional organization

This statement has been approved by legal for use on websites and in other written communications: “UAB has many degree programs (both on-campus and online) that can lead to professional licensure or certification (PLC). Licensure requirements vary from state to state and by professional organization. UAB is working to develop an online, publically-accessible database, to assist in providing this state-by-state information. In the meantime, if you are interested in learning about potential professional licensure requirements in your state for a specific degree program, please contact the UAB State Authorization office at or callDr. Lisa Reburn (205) 934-3258.”

This statement has also been approved by legal for use on websites related specifically to programs that can lead to professional licensure or certification: The ______degree program is designed to lead to a professional licensure (certification), ______. While there is a national professional exam, ______, associated with the ______licensure, specific licensure requirements still vary from state to state and byprofessional organization. (If applicable.)UAB is working to develop an online, publically-accessible database, to assist in providing this state-by-state information. In the meantime, if you are interested in learning about potential professional licensure requirements in your state for a specific degree program, please contact the UAB State Authorization office at or callDr. Lisa Reburn (205) 934-3258.”

  1. Links on websites to any relevant professional organizations and appropriate contacts
  2. Provide this information in relevant written communication. The purpose of these regulations is student protection. Be sure your students are aware.

Having calls or inquiries go through the State Authorization email or phone number for now, will assist our office in tracking and developing the database. All requests will be sent to the appropriate contact person in each PLC program at UAB. We will work together to get the correct answer to thecurrent or prospective student. Developing the PLC database is an enormous task. Together, we will accomplish it.

*National Council-State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA) Policies and Standards -currently enforceable

*Borrower Defense to Repayment (BDTR)-currently enforceable (for marketing & representations relied on by students who take out student loans July 1, 2017 and later)

*Program Integrity and Improvement-effective July 1, 2018: requires very specific notifications and disclosures to students and prospective students concerning education programs that can lead to professional licensure. We must disclose all the “prerequisites” for professional licensure for the relevant occupation(s) in any state in which we enroll students. (The 50-state publicly-accessible database will help fulfil some of this obligation.)
