Directors to attend conference in Vancouver Canada

[1]This month sees the annual conference and exchange of the IIDL where many of the world leaders in Disability Support, program design and implementation and policy creation, will be in attendance. This will be Q.L.S.s second attendance, holding us in a sound position to ensure that the future direction of Q.L.S. is not taken just by the influence of domestic matters, but of those issues that are of global concern.

The exchange is of great interest, as we will travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba in central Canada to spend time with a very progressive service. This will be an opportunity for us to share a little of our achievements as a service, the current models in which we engage, and the trends and influences of the Australian sector. A review of our trip will be presented via the newsletter upon our return, so watch this space.

Queensland drivers caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel more than twice in 12 months will be slugged double demerit points and face a $353 fine.[2]

The laws that came into effect today (1 September 2015) will see learner drivers or P-platers lose their licence altogether for repeat phone offences.

The new rules are part of the State Government's crackdown on road safety.

Assistant Police Road Commissioner Dale Pointon said mobile phone use is a leading cause of deaths on the state's roads.

"It only takes a moment to cause an accident and a crash and the consequences can be severe," he said.

"The person who's doing it always thinks they're fine, it's everyone else around them who notices they're not fine, [that] they're all over the road."

He warned drivers police would not be showing any leniency.

"Any use of a mobile phone at all whether it be talking, texting ... so it's absolutely essential that you have a strategy not to use a mobile phone in your motor vehicle when you're driving," he said.

"That includes when at traffic lights, or when you're parked somewhere, but not properly parked."

The tough new measures have been applauded by the RACQ's Steve Spalding.

"It is dangerous and irresponsible to use a phone while you are driving, and enough is enough, it can't continue," he said.

"There's no question that using a phone is linked to serious crashes.

"If the driver's not looking where they're going then they've just got no chance of keeping that car safely on the road."

Additional Information:

It has been estimated that 22% of all car crashes in Queensland are attributed to people using phones whilst driving.

Figures show that there are 5 amputations a week in Queensland as a result of car accidents

Double demerit points is 6 points.
