About the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra9

How to apply10

Foreword from the Chief Executive

I have an unshakeable belief that music has the power to change people’s lives. I have personally witnessed it.

You will be joining a small but highly successful team of people who work hard supporting each otherto realise the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s ambition to ‘enhance lives through music’.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra(BSO) may be regionally based, but it in an orchestra withextra-ordinary reach anda remit that makes it truly unique amongst all UK Orchestras.

I joined Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 2012because of its high artistic values, outstanding Chief Conductor and international reputation. Its tradition of world-class music making has captured the respect and regard of audiences both nationally and internationally.

In October 2015, following BSO’s performance of Salome, that BSO was described as ‘a hardworking, underfunded, yet splendid orchestra that really is one of this country’s cultural miracles’.

This is not just hyperbole. BSO’spioneering programme of education, participation and community engagement ‘BSO participate’ has establishedreached over 67,000 people, children and young people. The impact of its work has ensured BSO’s passage to the very heart of the social fabric and regional identity of the South West.

There is a great fundraising story to be told about this incredible organisation and indeed, over the last 5 years, the Development function has mobilised the support of companies, charitable trusts and individuals to support our artistic mission and work beyond the concert hall.

I hope you will join me, the Development team and the wider Orchestra as we pen the next exciting chapter of this remarkable organisation.

Dougie Scarfe

Chief Executive

Welcome from the Head of Development

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is one of the UK’s leading orchestras, proudly serving communities throughout the South and South West as well as performing nationally and internationally. It is one of the most dynamic and innovative symphony orchestras in the world. BSO, as it approaches its 125th anniversary, is a heritage brand which represents the highest order of artistic accomplishment and the unwavering pursuit of excellence and beauty. It is perhaps unsurprising that it has a loyal customer base that is fiercely passionate about BSO.

It was this reputation and a largely untapped fundraising territory that drew me to this organisation in 2012. Almost five years later, income from voluntary sources has increased significantly and the now established Development team has built an excellent foundation of support from a community of philanthropic supporters, funders and corporate sponsors.

Behind these fundraising successes lies an organisation that is uncompromising in its commitment to high artistic values and the belief that music changes lives. This belief is at the heart of BSO’s inspiring programme of education and learning ‘BSO Participate’ which aims to ensure that people from all walks of life to have the opportunity to experience its world-class music.

For an experienced professional fundraiser there awaits a fabulous opportunity to join a very successful fundraising team and play a part in helping BSO it achieve its mission to create a world where music prospers, musical ambitions are realised and lives are transformed. This is the proposition that is at the core of our case for support and it is one that will resonate with both trusts and foundations and companies alike.

The opportunity to secure new support from companies and charitable trusts and foundations is significant and I want to recruit a new member to the team that will relish the challenge that lies ahead. This is where you will come in.

You will be an experienced fundraiser with experience of corporate and trust fundraising. You will need to be adept at cultivating and managing relationships and managing but also you will need to be someone who genuinely enjoys the process, understand the motivations of both companies and charitable trusts and can translate this into active support.

I would like to invite you to apply for what promises to be a rewarding and exciting role with BSO.
