(GW Plastics)
Subject: Marketable Skills: Communication
Materials:Hand out and vocabulary list
Lesson objective(s): For the students to have the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with supervisors and co-workers.
Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs:Lesson can be altered to fit student needs. For example a hand out will be provided with this lesson. It can be used on the Elmo for the visual learner and the hand out can be read aloud for auditory learner. Lesson can be whole group, small group, or pair share.
ENGAGEMENT
  • Describe how the teacher will capture students’ interest- Teacher will tell students we are going to play a game (this should get students attention ASAP). Ask students who has had a job interview, or has worked and had to call in for the day (many hands should be raised)? Ask a couple of students to share their experience and describe the dialogue in the conversation. Such as, what was your boss’s reaction? How did you handle calling in? What words did you use in the conversation? The teacher can also share an experience. Then tell students you need a volunteer for this game. Define and provideexamples of role play so students can understand the concept. Role play is defined asto assume the attitudes, actions, and discourse of another, especially in a make-believe situation in an effort to understand a different point of view or social interaction. Explainemployee/employer for scenario one.
  • What kind of questions should the students ask themselves after the engagement?Students should reflect and ask themselves have I had a similar experience? Did I communicate effectively? What did I do right? What could I have changed? How could I have made that experience better?

EXPLORATION
  • Describe what hands-on/minds-on activities students will be doing. Teacher will introduce vocabulary (punctual, communication, timely matter, respect, consequence).Teacher will define terms and provide examples for each word. Vocabulary can be changed to accommodate individual classrooms or students. Teacher will model scenario two. Teacher will discuss the vocabulary usage and the content of the scenario. Scenario one describes an employee with lack of respect and communication. Scenario two describes an employee who is respectful and communicates well with employer.
  • List “big idea” conceptual questions the teacher will use to encourage and/or focus students’ explorationthe teacher can ask the following: What does it mean to communicate? How can it help us in a job? By communicating to your employer what message does that send? Or by not communicating what message does that send to an employer.

EXPLANATION
  • Student explanations should precede introduction of terms or explanations by the teacher. What questions or techniques will the teacher use to help students connect their exploration to the concept under examination? The teacher and student will create a scenario together. Teacher can be employer and student can be employee or vice versa. This allows the teacher to recognize if any student are not understanding material being presented.
  • List higher order thinking questions which teachers will use to solicit student explanations and help them to justify their explanations. In the scenarios that are being created teacher can ask is the communication being effective. Is the communication being efficient?

ELABORATION
  • Describe how students will develop a more sophisticated understanding of the concept. Students can create a scenario of their own.
  • What vocabulary will be introduced and how will it connect to students’ observations?Vocabulary words are punctual, communication, timely manner, consequence, and respect. Students will gain meaning of common words that could assist them in communicating to an employer.
  • How is this knowledge applied in our daily lives? This knowledge effects them immediately and can be applied directly to their current job or future job.

EVALUATION
  • How will students demonstrate that they have achieved the lesson objective? By applying it to real life situations. For example an employer/employee.
  • This should be embedded throughout the lesson as well as at the end of the lesson. The teacher should be providing constant positive feedback regarding communication.

Scenario 1

Employer: (secretary) Hello thank you for calling ______. How may I help you?

Employee: Ya um I not going in today.

Employer: Sir may I have your name, please.

Employee: It’s John.

Employer: John let me transfer you to Tony.

Employee: ok.

Employer: (supervisor Tony) John why are you calling in today?

Employee: I can’t go cause I have court.

Employer: John I really need you in today. If you were punctual the last two days we would not be behind schedule. Larry covered for you both days by staying late. It’s not fair to him to come in on his day off. I see you do not have respect for your job or your co-workers. I explained to you yesterday about your actions having consequences, but clearly it didn’t stick.

Employee: Well I can’t come today.

Employer: I know and I’m sorry you didn’t take this job serious. You didn’t communicate to us by calling the last two days to say you were going to be late. I’m letting you go.

Employee: But I’m calling you now. So you want me to miss court to come to work? I will go to jail.

Employer: John how long have you known about your court date? Why didn’t you request time off in a timely manner?

Employee: I can’t believe you are firing me! I was only an hour late yesterday and 30 minutes the day before. I showed up didn’t I!

Employer: John please turn in your badge tomorrow morning. Thank you and good bye.

Scenario 2

Employer: (secretary) Hello thank you for calling ______. How may I help you?

Employee: Hi may I speak with Tony. This is John. I calling to remind Tony I will not be in today.

Employer: John let me transfer you to Tony.

Employee: Ok.

Employer: (supervisor Tony) John I see you requested to switch shifts with Larry two weeks ago. Thank you for letting us know in advance. We appreciate the communication. See you tomorrow.
