1. / Robert Turk-1[1, 2]was born about 1690 in Ireland[1, 2]. He died in 1772 in Augusta County, Virginia[1, 2].
He married Margaret. She died about 1770[1, 2].
Notes for Robert Turk:

There is a record of a group of Scotch Irish Presbyterians emigrating to Boston from Ulster Province
Ireland in 1718. 311 Ulster Province "inhabitants of North of Ireland" signed a Petition to Governor
Shute of Mass. on 26 Mar 1718 indicating that they and other were about ready to leave for America if
"suitable encouragement" was given. This petition was delivered to Governor Shute by William Boyd
who was a passenger on a ship called "William & Mary" which arrived in Boston harbor on 28 July
1718. Other ships followed within the next month. One person who signed the petition was John
Gray. Robert Turk, nor any other Turk, signed the petition. Many of the Scotch Irish Presbyterians
who arrived in 1718 spent the first winter in the Maine area. There is a York County, ME deed from
Nathaniel Gerrish "of the town of Portsmouth in ye province of New Hampshire to Paul Wentworth of
Dover involving land in the town of Berwick, ME dated 5 April 1719. John Gray and Robert Turk
signed as witnesses to this deed. The Minutes of the Selectmen of Boston for 24 October 1719
contain an entry that Robert "Tark" with wife and three children who came into town from Berwick in a
sloop, Thomas Bell master, then having been here about 3 days were "warned" to depart town. One
the same day the same "warning" was also given to John Gray with his wife and five children. On the
basis of this evidence, I conclude that Robert Turk emigrated to America through Boston harbor,
probably in 1718.
Robert Turk witnessed a will of John Loughten on 2 February 1732/33 in Sussex County, DE.
Nothing else is know about Robert Turk's whereabouts or actions between 1719 and he appearance
in Orange/Augusta County, Virginia in 1739.
Robert Beverley received a land patent to 118,491 acres in Orange County, Virginia on 6 Sept. 1736.
This land was located in the part of Orange County, Virginia which was cut off to form Augusta
County, Virginia between 1738-1745. This land later became known at "Beverley Manor". On 27
February 1739 Robert Beverley deeded 1313 acres of Beverley Manor to Robert Turk of Orange
County, Virginia. The Orange County, Virginia Court Order book III, page 428 contains a proof of
importation of Robert Turk, Margaret, Jane, John, Ann, Thomas, James and William Turk. The
importation record says "from Ireland to Pennsylvania and from there into this Colony." This proof of
importation was required for people to be entitled to own land. This establishes Robert Turks
residence in Orange/Augusta County, Virginia by 1739. This record also suggests that Robert Turk
may have immigrated directly from Ireland to Pennsylvania and raises some doubt about the 1718
arrival stated above.
On 24 September 1741 Robert Turk deeded 437 acres of his 1313 acre tract to his son, Thomas Turk
(while still in Orange County, Virginia) for 60 pounds. On 18 February 1746 Robert Turk and his wife,
Margaret, deeded 437 acres of his 1313 acre tract to Robert Patrick for 62 pounds. Also, on 18
November 1747 Robert Turk and his wife, Margaret, deeded 437 acres of this 1313 tract to Robert
Patrick (it is unclear whether this was the same 437 acres or a new 437 acres). Note that 437 acres
is exactly 1/3 of the 1313 acre tract. The suspicion is that Robert Patrick married one of Robert Turk's
daughters.
According to the James Turk bible record, Robert Turk's son, Thomas Turk, was born in March, 1718.
This means that he was likely born either days before his parents departed Ireland for America or on
shipboard during the journey to America. Thomas Turk signed a Declaration in Augusta County,
Virginia on 12 October 1798in the case of "Estill vs. Ramsey" which says that he is age 88, which, if
correct, means that he was born in 1710. I tend to disbelieve the 1710 date, because Thomas Turk
died in 1809 and it does not seem likely that he would have made it to age 99 (even though age 91 is

pretty old too). Also, from the names of Robert Turk's children mention in the 1739 importation record in Orange County, Virginia, Thomas was the fourth child and from information know about the other children, the other children who are assumed to have been older than him do not seem to have been born before 1710.

Robert Turk wrote his will on 24 September 1772 in Augusta County, Virginia and it was proved in Court on 17 November 1772. It mentions "my son Thomas Turk" who got all land and personal possessions, "my son James Turk one English shilling. Thomas Turk was name sole executor. Witnesses were Charles Teas, Thomas Turk, Jr., and Elizabeth Gleave. Robert Turk signed his own name. By this time Robert Turk's son, John Turk had died (1755 in South Carolina) and presumably his other son, William Turk, mentioned in the 1739 importation record, had died (or moved far away).

Notes for Margaret: [1649900.ftw]

[RobertMAllen.ftw]

Her date of death is an estimate based upon the fact that she signed a deed with her husband, Robert Turk, in 1765 and she was not mentioned as living in Robert Turk's Will written in 1772.

Children of Robert Turk and Margaret are:

  1. William Turk, D: 06 Mar 1773 in Abbeyville, South Carolina[3].

  1. Thomas Turk Sr.-2(Robert-1)[1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]was born on 17 Mar 1718[1, 2, 4]. He died on 28 Jun 1809 in

(2) Mary Gleaves on 01 Apr 1766 in Augusta County, Virginia[5], daughter of Matthew Gleaves Sr. and Esther.

Notes for Thomas Turk Sr.: [1649900.ftw]

[RobertMAllen.ftw]

There is some confusion about Thomas Turk's birth date. The James Turk bible says "March, 1718". Thomas Turk signed a Declaration in the Estill v. Ramsey lawsuit in Augusta County, Virginia on 12 October 1798 in which he apparently states that he is "aged eighty eight years" which would make him born in 1710. I choose the believe the bible record rather than the Declaration. Thomas Turk signed his mark on the Declaration, indicating that he could not write so that the person who wrote the Declaration could have made a mistake. I have a copy of the actual Declaration and it shows an interlineation and a cross out on the same line as the date.

There is an Orange County, Virginia deed from Robert Turk to Thomas Turk dated 23 September 1741 involving 437 acres of his 1313 acre tract in Beverley Manor. Note that 437 acres is exactly 1/3 of this 1313 acre tract.

His death date is recorded in the James Turk bible.

He wrote his will on 3 August 1808 in Augusta County, Virginia and it was proved in Court on 24 July 1809. It mentions his "wife Mary", "wife's mother Esther Woolman", "grandson Thomas Turk McCullouch", "grandson Thomas Turk Rhea", "daughters Esther Johnston, Betsey Coger, Rebecca Anderson", "son James Turk, "my children to wit, Esther Johnston, Betsey Coger, Rebecca Anderson and my James", "my daughter Jane Allen one dollar", "my daughter Betty Glave one dollar", "my son Thomas Turk one dollar". Executors were Andrew Ramsey, William Patrick and Robert Porterfield. Thomas Turk signed by his mark.

Notes for Margaret Mary Woolman: [1649900.ftw]

[RobertMAllen.ftw]

On account says that her maiden name might have been Kerr. Her death date is an estimate based upon the fact that she co-signed a deed with her husband, Thomas Turk, in 1757 and Thomas Turk married his second wife in 1766.

Children of Thomas Turk Sr. and Margaret Mary Woolman are:

  1. Margaret Turk, B: Aug 1745[3], D: 01 Jan 1799 in Bath County, Virginia[3], M: John Rhea, 01 Jan 1775[3].
