6) BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK:

6.1. NEED FOR THE STUDY:

According to Ayurvedic literature, Shareera Rachana deals with structure of body parts, but some times description of some parts of body is not mentioned properly, such as Karna Shareera. There are five sense organs in our body [1] viz: Srotra, Ghrana, Rasana, Chakshu, and Sparshane. Karna is the adhistana (site) of Sravanendriya. In Karna Akasha Mahabhuta is predominant. [2]It is one of Bahirmukha srotas [3]. The distance between Karna and apanga is 5 Anguli. [4] Karna is supplied by two Dhamani and ten Sira’s. [5] Karna Pali or Karna lathika is one of structure of Karna. It is the lobule of externalear.

According to Ayurvedic classics Karna rogas are following,

1. Sushruta -28 types [6]

2. Charaka-4 types [7]

3. Vagbhata-25 types [8] (15 diseases of ear canal and 10 external ear disease)

Badhirya (Deafness) is one of Karna roga, which is due to vitiated vata and kapha doshas.

In modern sciences it has separate specialization department. i.e.E.N.T. In this subject about ear they described vividly including structures, functions and diseases.

Our Aacharyas has mentioned detailed explanation about Karna gata roga but there is no detail structural consideration of Karna, except external ear (Bahya karna).

Hence this work is taken to study the structure & function of Karna in relation to Karna gata vyadhi and special study on Badhirya.

6.2. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE:

1)  The five sense organs are composed of five Mahabhutas with predominance of one in each. They are known by influence through their actions and it is on basis of which intellect proceeds

2)  According to Sarangadhara, the region around the ear is slightly fomented and ears filled with warm oils, juices of plants or urine of animals to treat the Karna rogas. While the patient retains this medication for a duration of 100 or 500 or 1000 matras.[9]

3)  According to Yogaratnakara, the vayu and kapha acting together obstruct the sound bearing ducts of the ears, this results the Badhirya[10]

4)  According to kashyapa samhita, the desire to increase the ear lobes for wearing the ornaments was very prevalent during ancient days. Naturally the measures to increase and make these corpulent were also in practice.[11]

5)  According to Sushruta, on the back side of ears situated below are Vidhura marmas, these, on injury, cause deafness.[12]

6)  Deafness is impaired hearing and it is great social and educational handicap. The plight of blind person or lame man can easily be visualized by every one and they evoke sympathy, but no one sympathizes with a deafness as his handicap is not noticeable.[13]
