Course Syllabus –Fall 2017

  1. Catalog Description: Identification and treatment of speech and language differences in diverse populations.
  1. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
  1. Discuss terminology related to cultural and linguistic diversity
  2. Describe the population diversity in the United States and in North Carolina
  3. Discuss the effects of cultural beliefs on prevention, assessment, and intervention of communication disorders across the lifespan.
  4. Evaluate the impact of cultural and linguistic variables on service delivery and compliance with recommendations.
  1. Teaching Strategies: Multiple strategies incorporating direct instruction, collaborative learning groups, peer teaching, group discussion, and student guided problem solving.

All specific grading guidelines and other course documents will be published on Canvas and discussed the first day of class. Once an assignment or quiz deadline is past, it will not be re-opened.

Students are expected to check Canvas and email regularly to ensure that they are fully aware of all assignments, announcements and other class related information. Failure to do so may limit the ability to complete assignments and receive full credit for class participation.

A.Autobiography (50 points):DUE 9/1/2017 at 9:00 a.m.

This assignment will provide a medium for you to explore your personal concept of culture including your family history and upbringing, experiences with cultural and linguistic diversity, and potential influences of cultural perspectives on practice. The completed autobiography must be submitted to Canvas before the deadline.(All SLOs)

B.Diversity experience/interview (50 points): DUE 9/15/2017 at 9:00 a.m.

Students may choose between the two assignments listed below. Please let me know if you have any questions about the appropriateness of your selection. You will need to provide documentation of the experience of interview, such an audio recording, bulletin, etc. (All SLOs)

Engage in an experience that reflects a culture substantially different than yourdominant culture. Examples include, but are not limited to living at “poverty level” for a specified length of time, using public transportation, attending a religious service unrelated to her/his current religious preference, etc. Many opportunities are available through UNCG as well as throughout Greensboro. This assignment cannot be achieved by reporting on something that you have done prior to this class.

OR

Interview an individual whose cultural and/or linguistic background is substantially different from yours in order to compose a biography of the subject. This cannot be a person that you already know well or a client that you have worked with as a graduate clinician.

This assignment must be done individually, not as a group. For example, a group of you may choose to attend the National Folk Festival, but for that to be acceptable for this assignment, you need to interact one-on-one with someone who is not like you in some significant way. Several students cannot talk to the same person.

The person with whom you interact cannot be someone that you know or the family member of someone that you know.

C.Comparison of A and B(50 points):DUE 9/22/2017 at 9:00 a.m.

After you have completed your autobiography and the experience/interview, find a way to compare the cultural and linguistic differences between the two. Focus on how the similarities and differences would impact your assessment and management of culturally/linguistically clients, as well as their compliance with treatment and recommendations. Tryto think beyond that one specific experience to reflect on how interaction with diverse groups of people may impact you as a person and as a clinician(All SLOs)

D.Checklist quizzes (4 @ 10 points each = 40 points).

There are 4 quizzes that must be completed at the times noted in Canvas. Although you will receive points for completing the quizzes/checklists, they are not graded and I can’t see your answers. The purpose is for you to think about your experiences and comfort with different groups or situations, not to try to figure out what I want you to say.

E.Discussion Posts (20 points each, 4 topics = 80 points):DUE at 9:00 a.m., 8/25, 9/1. 9/8. 9/15

Prior to classes 2-5, I will post reading material and/or video links. You need to watch/read the material and post comments re: the specific question related to the items. You won’t be able to see anyone else’s posts until you have completed yours, but we will discuss them in the next class. There are no right or wrong opinions/answers. The assignment simply provides an opportunity for you to think about these topics.

F.Professional materials (2 @ 5 points each = 10 points):DUE 9/22/2017 at 9:00 a.m.

Each student needs to post links/ articles/PDF files that contain professional information that would be helpful in the assessment and treatment of culturally diverse groups. I have already posted some items in the Discussion Board so that you can have an idea about what is appropriate. Popular press and social media items are not appropriate. Items can only be posted by one student, so please review what has already been posted so that you don’t duplicate someone else’s work. At the end of the class, each of you will have an excellent reference list for your future work(All SLOs).

Grading:Students will receive 5 points for materials/resources that are professional, not duplicates and appropriately referenced. One or more points will be deducted for each post that does not meet the criteria above. No points will be given for duplicates (already posted by another student) of from non-professional sites.

  1. Grading Scale: Final grades will be based on the percentage of points that a student earns relative to the total number of points (280) possible. The grading scale for assigning letter grades is:

A94-100%

A-90-93%

B+ 87-89%

B84-86%

B-80-83%

C+ 77-79%

C74-76%

C-70-73%

Fbelow 70%

11. Response to emails: I am happy to answer any student emails regarding class procedures or content. However, I will only answer them during business hours, Monday- Friday, 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. I will check them each day before I leave and each morning as soon as I arrive. I will not respond to emails at night or on weekends.

12. Academic Integrity Policy: Each student is required to read the UNCG Academic Integrity Policy on the web page, and the Student Conduct Policies at Each student will affirm that s/he has complied with those policies with a signature on all major work submitted for the course. In addition, sending any document electronically or posting to a Discussion Board implies compliance with the Academic Integrity Policy. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in lowering of the course grade or expulsion from the class.

13. Attendance Policy and Late Work: Students are expected to attend all classes, but no attendance will be taken. If you have any special needs regarding absences, please speak with the course instructor before the first class. Late work will not be accepted unless prior arrangement has been made with the instructor regarding a legitimate and documentable medical or personal emergency.

14. Learning differences/disabilities:For students with documented physical or learning differences and/or disabilities, appropriate arrangements will be made for completion of all class and assessment experiences. However, documentation of these differences and/or disabilities must be made available to the instructor prior to the first assessment experience.
