Weight Training( .5 credit – 1 Semester )

Students will be introduced to the basic fundamentals of proper weight training principals. Students will learn how to improve individual health and performance through proper exercise that will include agility, cardio, and weight training skills.This course will include basic knowledge and principles of physiology, exercise modes, and the five components of fitness.Students will develop personal goals in an area of interest such as athletic performance, fitness, body composition, cardiovascular endurance, etc. Primary assessment will be an evaluation of student progress as they strive to accomplish their personal goals. Active participation in trainingand applying knowledge learned will constitute the remainder of your grade.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Self-Directed Learner - Set priorities and establish achievable goals and personal plans.
  • Apply prior learning experience to new activities and situations.
  • Cooperate with and helps to encourage others in group situations.
  • Listen to, interpret, and use information effectively.
  • Communicate effectively and clearly through writing using appropriate form, grammar, and content.
  • Demonstrate and works to achieve and maintain a health enhancing level of fitness.
  • Set Goals that exhibit a physically active lifestyle.

Content & Sequence

There is no text book required for Weight Training. The order of training will vary depending on class size and equipment. Modes of training will be personalized. Discussion topics will include components of fitness, personal diet & exercise plan, performance drug facts and more.

Course Activities:

  • Develop skills for strength, sports, lifetime fitness and recreational activities.
  • Exercise Types: aerobic, anaerobes, isotonic, isokinetic, and isometric
  • 5 Components Fitness: cardiovascular endurance; body composition, flexibility,

muscular strength & muscular endurance.

  • Goal Setting and Written Assessment

This is an activity based course and participation in all activities is a critical component of your grade. Long term absences or injuries may require student taking a makeup course. All assignments must be complete, correct, and turned in on time to get the maximum points. A variety of assessments will be utilized in this course including journals, observation student progress, self assessment, goal setting and progress towards personal goals.

Make Up Work or Absences

  • Variety of workout activities may be used.
  • Short paper on related activities.
  • Each unexcused day missed will adversely affect YOUR GRADE.
  • Any student that has a medical condition or injury must bring a note from your parent or doctor and submit it to your instructor. No exceptions.

(If you have any special medical condition, it should be brought to the attention of the instructor immediately)

Course Expectations

  • Comply with Aiea student handbook and follow directions of instructor.
  • No disruptive behavior. The following are considered disruptive behavior:
  • Not following instructor's instructions.
  • Swearing, teasing, fighting, etc.
  • Not participating in class activities.
  • Not returning equipment at the end of the period.

CONSEQUENCES

A. Tardies and Cuts Student handbook will be followed.

B.Disruptive Behavior:

1. Minor infractions - verbal warning, running, etc. Persistent minor problems

will be cause for extra work and/or detention.

2.Major infractions (drugs, stealing, fighting, etc.) – Vice Principal, Principal and Parents notified.

Locker Room

  • Lockers
  • Do not share lockers or locker combinations since this may lead to potential problems. No horseplay in the locker room.
  • If an article of yours is missing, report this immediately to your instructor and the main office.
  • Be properly dressed ( shorts, shoes).
  • Students who consistently dress improperly will affect their grade

Extra Credit

  • All students that participate in a physical extracurricular activities may earn bonus points for their participation. They must have the Activity/Participation form signed by their coach and parent or guardian.
