Continued success for Llandyfaelog Show

Several shows claim to be the last of the season but it is the Llandyfaelog event that stakes the strongest claim.

Until three years ago a new site had to be found each year for the September attraction but, now held annually at Ffos Las Racecourse, Trimsaran this event is continually increasing in popularity with excellent facilities provided for everyone.

Now in its 110th year, this extensive show with sections for numerous classes of livestock and a huge horticultural area has always proved to be a great social gathering and a special fun day out thoroughly enjoyed by all ages.

From the horse and pony sections Gower farmer, David Joseph, chose the winning Veteran horse, Masmitch, a stallion owned by Sue James and ridden by Frankie Currell as supreme champion with the 10 year old bay Shire brood mare, Bodafon Marie Rose, owned by Elfed and Louise Davies in reserve.

Topping the pony entries were Debbie and Gareth Jones with their striking palomino and Winter Fair winner, the yearling filly, Fairywood Gwenllian, which also won Section B and took the Pony Breeding trophy ahead of the Coloured winner, the seven year old Bil-I-Am shown under saddle by Lorna Morgan.

Best from the Hunter line up was a Royal Welsh winner Stradey Hanna, the eight year old chestnut mare owned by Eurig and Delia Harries which recently qualified for Horse of the Year at the Derbyshire Festival.

The big attraction in the cattle judging ring was to select the Holstein champion of champions from animals which had won their classes at other shows across Wales, including the Royal Welsh, over the summer months.

Surprisingly, two qualifiers from the local cattle classes held during the morning went on to win both the cow and heifer sections for Elwyn and Cheryl Thomas: the home bred June calved fourth calver, GatrogSarge Lavender –which also won the same award last year –and the first time shown March calved in-milk heifer Normead Baxter Kansas.

Adrian and Wendy Evans also had a very good day with their Beltex entries in the sheep classes firstly winning the breed prize, then the supreme individual and going on to also take the trophy for the winning group of three.

The Show Society’s Centenary trophy for gaining most points in the domestic section was again awarded to John Wheatland.
