ALEXANDER AND TEAM LAST YEAR WON NATIONAL AND SAN FRANCISCO “TRIAL LAWYER OF THE YEAR”
(San Francisco, CA) --The awards continue to roll in for San Francisco victims’ rights attorney Mary Alexander: Alexander has been named among the “Top 25 plaintiff lawyers in California” by the state’s prestigious legal paper, The Daily Journal, in both the San Francisco and Los Angeles editions. The paper said they gave the honor to plaintiff lawyers who “consistently” bring about “change in the law, industry, and society.”Alexander is one of four women honored with the award statewide.
The “top 25 Plaintiff lawyer” award’s consistency component for impact on the law, industry, and society applies to Alexander. She has won:
- A landmark $1.15 billion case against the country’s top lead paint companies for dangers to California children
- A $45 million verdict for a San Mateo victim, who had her neck broken, was paralyzed for life, and became a quadriplegic when her car was struck by a driver speeding through a red light
- A $13.3 million verdict for a severely injured client in Hall v. Yosemite Park and Curry Company, in which faulty bicycle brakes triggered a crash resulting in quadriplegia
- A $5.5 million settlement for a long haul trucker was run over by another trucker while outside of the cab of his rig safely locking and inspecting his load.
- A $4 million settlement in a San Francisco Municipal Railway accident, Landsverk v. CCSF
- A $4 million settlement in a pedestrian accident, Ruszak v. State Farm
Last July, Alexander was co-lead counsel of the case that won the $1.15 billion verdict against the world's largest paint companies to pay for the effects of lead paint on thousands of California children, and she and her team were named as the Public Justice prestigious national "Trial Lawyer of the Year." The honor was bestowed by Public Justice, a powerful national legal advocacy organization in Washington, DC which works to confront poverty, injustice, and discrimination.
The Award also follows Alexander and her team's April winning of the San Francisco "Trial Lawyer of the Year" for the case by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association and its Public Justice Case Evaluation Committee. The criteria emphasized a case's "impact and size, establishment of precedent, and time involved in litigating."
In the case, the court ordered top lead paint companies including Sherwin-Williams, NL Industries, and ConAgra to pay $1.15 billion into a fund to be used to remove the lead potentially dangerous to children in hundreds of thousands of homes in ten cities and counties in California. Alexander stated that the verdict came after 14 years of litigation and 5 weeks of trial. The final judgment came after two appeals, one of which was a ruling by the California Supreme Court.
Alexander, who resides in Atherton with her office in San Francisco, is former National President of the American Association for Justice, formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
