Applications are invited for a Consultant in Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology. This is a permanent 10 PA post based at GlasgowDentalHospital and School. The post-holder will perform service activity that is managed via the Diagnostics Directorate of NHS GGC, although the duties will be based in the DentalHospital.

The appointee will be responsible, together with colleagues, for the provision of a specialist Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology service, including playing an active role in the teaching and training of postgraduate dentists in this subject area to specialist level.

Applicants must have full GDC registration and be eligible for inclusion in the GDC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to a CCT in Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within six months of confirmed entry at the date of interview. Non UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

1. Glasgow and the Surrounding Area

Glasgow, with a population of around 1.2 Million, is Scotland’s largest city, and one of Europe’s liveliest with a varied and colourful social and cultural life that can cater for every taste.

Glasgow is a city of contrasts; the bustle of a major commercial and business centre, the greenery of parks and gardens, and a wealth of art galleries, museums, cinemas and theatres. Newcomers quickly feel at home in this vibrant and friendly city. Of particular note is the University’s HunterianMuseum that is the oldest public museum in Scotland. The HunterianArtGallery has important art collections and contains a reconstruction of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s own house.

Glasgow has an extensive road and rail public transport system with one of the largest commuter rail networks outside London and its own underground railway, the ‘subway’, which serves the University and the centre of the city.

In 2014 Glasgow hosted the Commonwealth Games confirming its place as a centre of sporting excellence.

2. Diagnostics Directorate

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde serves a population of around 2 million located across the West of Scotland. The New Cancer Centre serves a population of around 2.8 million i.e. over half the population of Scotland. The Diagnostics Directorate has responsibility for all Laboratory services, Clinical Physics, Medical Photography, Bio engineering and Diagnostic Imaging. Diagnostic Imaging includes Clinical Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Regional imaging services (Neuroradiology, Paediatric Radiology, Oncological Imaging/PET CT, Breast Screening and Dental Radiology).

3. Diagnostic Imaging

Adult acute Radiology services are organised on a sector basis with Clinical Leads covering each sector (North, South, and Clyde). Clinical Leads for Neuroradiology, PET CT, Paediatric Radiology, Adult Interventional and Breast Screening services are also in post. Clinical Leads report to the Clinical Director (Dr Ross MacDuff) and General Manager (Lynn Ross). There are also two Deputy CDs – Dr Andrew Watt and Dr Marzi Davies.

The key strategic aim of the Directorate is improve the quality of care provided to patients on the basis of clinical need by consolidating acute/emergency imaging support on a 24/7, 365 day basis and by complying with emergency, cancer related and scheduled care National waiting times targets. The Directorate is committed to seven day working and extending the working day.

The NHSGG out of hours imaging model for the adult acute service includes robust vascular/interventional on-call cover city wide and parallel non interventional cover on a site and sectoral basis.

Out of hours/weekend imaging cover is currently supported by the vast majority of NHSGGC Consultant Radiologists, mainly on a site by site basis. There is currently a pilot in place on the South sector providing extended evenings and weekend cover within a framework of recognised contractual hours this has been widely well received and is currently being evaluated.

4. Oral Health Directorate

The Oral Health Directorate is contained within the East Dunbartonshire Integrated Health and Social care Partnership and Regional Services, making a single NHSGGC Board wide organisation structure incorporating:

  • Oral Health Improvement

5. GlasgowDentalHospital and School

GlasgowDentalHospital and School is situated in the centre of Glasgow. It is part of the Oral Health Directorate structure and is the main referral centre for specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area. It also fulfils a similar role for surrounding Health Boards and serves a population of up to 3 million people.

The total number of chairs within the Hospital and School is approximately 160. In addition there is an adjoining Postgraduate Centre and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow is a 10 minute walk away. There are strong links with the University of Glasgow and other hospitals in the region and there is an excellent library with online literature search facilities.

GlasgowDentalHospital and School comprises the following clinical departments:

The DentalSchool delivers a modern, integrated Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme over five years to an undergraduate population of approximately 500 students. The course has been very highly ranked in recent league tables and is currently top for Dentistry in the Complete University Guide 2017.

Taught postgraduate programmes are offered in Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics.

6. Work of the Department

Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology is part of the Diagnostics Directorate of NHS GGC. Its academic component in the DentalSchool is part of the Section of Clinical Dentistry, which also includes Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Oral Surgery.

The clinical facilities for Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology have just undergone a major refurbishment, resulting in a modern, fit-for purpose facility. The main department is situated on Level 3 within the Dental Hospital & School. There are 7 imaging rooms, each containing a single machine, with dedicated cone beam CT (Imaging Sciences i-CAT), panoramic and small volume cone beam CT (Intrumentarium OP300), three intra-oral units (1 Carestream CS2200 and 2 Instrumentarium Focus), and an ultrasound unit (Philips iu22). All imaging is digital, and images are transferred to PACS, from which they are accessible to clinicians. Intra-oral images are captured using computed radiography indirect sensors, and the Vistascan system is in use in each of the 3 rooms. In addition to the imaging rooms, there is a reception area, PACS room for accessing images when clinicians are requesting an opinion, an area for the radiographers to post-process and access on-line material, and a shared office, primarily for the Specialty Registrar and management personnel. Radiographic requests are generated within Trakcare, and the information is automatically transferred to CRIS.

The Radiology Department is also responsible for a satellite facility located on Level 5, where the Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic clinics are situated. This facility has a combined pan oral radiography/cephalometry machine (Instrumentarium OP200D.

There are some further intra-oral units within the Dental Hospital & School, which are under the control of the clinical departments in which they are situated, and are primarily for provision of endodontic radiographs.

The Radiology Department in the Dental Hospital & School is part of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Diagnostics Directorate, and falls within the North Sector for managerial and administrative purposes. There are 4 WTE Band 6 radiographers Radiology staff from Glasgow Royal Infirmary also rotate to the Radiology Department within the Dental Hospital and School. Locally there is administrative staff that are overseen by the North Sectors Administration Manager. The senior management team members have a frequent presence in the department.

Other staff within Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology:
Staffing levels will change to meet future service and business priorities.
Academic staff members are responsible to: Professor J Bagg, Head of the Dental School for academic matters and to the Clinical Director (appointment process underway) for clinical matters. NHS activities fall within the management remit of the Diagnostics Directorate of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde.

8. Duties

7.1 Clinical

The Consultant will provide a diagnostic and advisory service to patients referred to the Department of Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology in the Dental Hospital. He/she will share with Consultant colleagues responsibility for the correct functioning of the Department. The Consultant will contribute to the professional supervision and management of the Training Grade staff. The successful applicant will report to the Lead Clinician in Imaging and will be professionally accountable to the Clinical Director and managerially accountable to the General Manager.

7.2Teaching & Training

A commitment of the post holder will be to the support of undergraduate education in the Dental School. The holder will work closely in this regard with the Head of the Dental School, Director of Dental Education and Head of the Section of Clinical Dentistry. The post holder will also play a role in the training of StRs undergoing specialist training and post graduate students.

7.3 Administration

Administrative duties include those which are associated with the care of patients and the running of the department. The Consultants work co-operatively with the Directorate Management in the efficient running of services and the post holder will be expected to share with Consultant colleagues the responsibility of advising the management team on clinical matters. There is a requirement to work within the financial and other constraints decided upon by the Directorate.

The post-holder may also be required to undertake limited administrative duties for the University Dental School in relation to undergraduate teaching.

7.4 Clinical Audit

The post holder will be expected to participate and contribute to the Clinical Audit Programme. Audit meetings are held within the Dental Hospital and School; these are an essential component of Clinical Governance.
