Applications are invited for a full-time post in General Adult Psychiatry in Inverclyde. Mental Health services in Inverclyde are provided by the integrated health and social work multidisciplinary CMHT, supported by a Primary Care Mental Health Team.

This post is based atInverclydeRoyalHospital and the Inverclyde Community Mental Health Team based at Crown House. The posts consist of 8 PA’s allocated between the Liaison service and the CMHT based at Crown House, Greenock. This would entail out patient clinic work allocated on a pro rata basis. The CMHT consultants are involved in the medical review of patients who attend the Community Response Service. On-call responsibilities currently consist of participation in the South Glasgow & Clyde Rota with a current frequency of 1:30.

The postholder will be supported by appropriate medical secretary time and by junior doctor input for inpatient sessions. Responsibilities will be shared between a total of 5 general adult psychiatrists in Inverclyde, and the successful applicant would be expected to work closely with colleagues to provide a full range of services.

The successful candidate would be encouraged to take the opportunities available for further education and continuing professional development. There are active education and audit programmes within the service.

The post is 8 sessions however this could be adapted to suit the needs of the applicant.

Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher Specialist Training leading to a CCT in Psychiatry or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within six months of confirmed entry at the date of interview. Non UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

JOB DESCRIPTION

CONSULTANT GENERAL ADULT PSYCHIATRIST –

Inverclyde CMHT andInverclydeRoyalHospital.

Applications are invited from dynamic and enthusiastic individuals for this full time General Adult post with an interest in Liaison. There is an established Community Mental Health Team in Inverclyde, and the successful applicant will be expected to work closely with colleagues to provide a full range of services to inpatients and outpatients. They will be supported by Junior Doctor sessions and Medical Secretary input.

  1. Present Service Provision

Community mental health services in Inverclyde are part of the Inverclyde HSCP, and cover a total population of 90,000. The Mental Health Partnership for Greater Glasgow and Clyde supports and coordinates the delivery of adult mental health services delivered by HSCP’s in four divisions across the Board area: South Clyde, South Glasgow, West Glasgow and Northeast Glasgow.

Deborah Gillespie is the Head of Service, Mental Health, Addictions and Homelessness and the Clinical Director is Dr Alexander Thom. The Associate Medical Director for Mental Health is Dr Michael Smith and the HSCPChief Officer is Brian Moore.

Inpatient psychiatric services in Inverclyde are provided at the newly refurbished (April 2012) Langhill Clinic, InverclydeRoyalHospital, which has 20 acute inpatient beds and 8 IPCU beds. A total of 20 beds provide inpatient intensive rehabilitation and continuing care services for South Clyde plus at the current time there are 12 continuing care beds located within the nearby Ravenscraig Hospital Campus.

Community Adult Mental Health Services are currently provided by an integrated Community Mental Health Team which is based in Crown House in central Greenock. The CMHT currently comprises of one Service Manager, one Consultant Psychologist, one Nurse Team Lead, eight Band 6 Community Mental Health Nurse Specialists, three Band 6 OT’s, eleven Band 5 Community Mental Health Nurses, seven Band 3 Support Workers, two Senior Social Workers, four Social Work Senior Practitioners, one Social Worker, two Social Work Assistants, three Homemakers, two Resource Workers, one Support Worker, and one Home Support and Day Care Worker.

The Community Response Service (CRS) provides intensive community assessments and treatment and consists of 6 members of staff.

There is an established Primary Care Mental Health Team which provides time limited psychological interventions to patients with mild to moderate mental health difficulties delivered within a primary care setting.

There are separate teams for Liaison Psychiatry which provides input to the AcuteHospital at Inverclyde Royal hospital and Rehabilitation Services. Patients in Inverclyde have access to specialist psychology, psychotherapy and addiction services. Forensic service provision includes access to the Forensic CMHT for patients requiring this service from the Board wide team. Inverclyde has access to the Eating Disorder Service which is the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Eating Disorders Service.

Child and Adolescent Services are based at the Child and Family Unit, Larkfield Road, Greenock. The Perinatal service is based at Leverndale Hopital with a GG&C wide remit.

Greater Glasgow and Clyde Esteem Service extended it’s remit to Clyde inSeptember 2014.

This service provides input to patients presenting with new onset psychosis and is supported by Consultant Psychiatrist input as well as a range of therapists from nursing and psychology.

The GG&C Out of Hours CPN service has provided overnightassessment of patients presenting with mental disorder from September 2014.

3. Duties of the Post

The successful candidate will be expected to provide out patient services to General Adult patients working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The post holder would have 2 out patient clinic sessions plus one CMHT team meeting/CPA/ tribunal session. The postholder would have input into the Community Response Service both offering medical advice and assessment of patients on a pro rata basis.

The post holder would have 4 sessions to provide consultant input to liaison and community response service.

Liaison service

The postholder will provide liaison services to InverclydeRoyalHospitalin collaboration with the nurse liaison specialist and the Community Response Team . The post holder will also provide input to the Community Response Team who review patients presenting in crisis. This team works withinthe CMHT.

Inverclyde consultants participate in the South Glasgow and Clyde on call rota with a current on call frequency of 1: 30.

The successful candidate will participate in the on call rota and cover for colleagues during absence in line with arrangements set out in the National Terms and Conditions. The on call week day rota covers the whole of Inverclyde and full time Consultants are on call 2 or 3 days per month. Domiciliary visits, court reports, Mental Health Act/Adults with Incapacity work and liaison assessments will be undertaken as required. The post will have sessional support as required from a Medical Secretary and ST1-3/FY2 doctor.

Eight sessions are allocated to direct clinical care split between the Liaison\ Community Response Service and the CMHT. There is one session allocated to supporting professional activities.

4.Teaching/Administration

The post holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the proper function of the clinical team including appraisal, clinical and non-clinical supervision of medical staff and clinical supervision of non-medical staff. He or she will also be expected to participate in the broader aspect of administration and management within the Inverclyde Division of Psychiatry and Inverclyde CHCP.

It is expected that the successful candidate will take part in Job Planning, Appraisal, Peer Review and Continuing Professional Development. Participation in audit or research is encouraged. The post holder will be actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students. In addition the post holder will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and staff of other disciplines.

The basic contract will be for a 8 PA consultant contract(7 DCC and 1 SPA)

The one SPA minimum will reflect activity such as appraisal, personal audit and professional development occurring outside study leave time. Once the candidate has been appointed more SPA time may be agreed for activities such as undergraduate and postgraduate medical training which takes place outside direct clinical care, as well as research and/or management. These activities must be specifically and clearly identified and be agreed with the candidate and desired by the department.
