Precalculus Math 12: Conic Sections Project[85 points]

Here is your task for the conic sections unit: Make a picture which incorporates conic sections

That’s it. No catch. No tricks. Your job is use the Desmos calculator as a tool to graph equations, forming them into a picture of your choosing. This is your chance to combine your keen mathematical skills with your creative side. This project has very few restrictions, but here are the guidelines you need to follow for picture creation and submission.

  • Use the Desmos online calculator to create your OWN UNIQUE picture or design. This will allow you to save your work as you go along. (You will need to create an account) You will want to consider restricting domains and/or ranges of your equations.
  • Your final drawing should incorporate at least 2 of the 4 conic sections learned in the previous unit in a meaningful way. You may also consider using other functions you have learned (or not learned yet!). You must use a minimum of 10 equations.
  • When your picture is complete on Desmos, print it and color in. (Digital enhancments encouraged)

How you will be graded. This project will be worth a total of 60 points. The attached rubric breaks down the point values into 3 main categories:

Part I. [45 points]

The product: you will turn in 2 sheets of paper – the Desmos graph, and the list of equations. Attach to colored paper

Part II [25 points]

Math work: a list of all equations used with the appropriate domains.

Part III [20 points]

Write an explanation to describe the use of at least 5 equations used in your picture. [2 page maximum; size 12; 1” margins; double spaced] Discuss how you developed the equations, and describe their role within your overall picture. Be specific. Should use equation editor when typing equations.

OR

Create a short story for your picture/design. [2 page maximum; size 12; 1” margins; double spaced]
