Conference Manager

Conference Manager

About the conference

IMPACT’s flagship event is a national conference that is held in early August and is targeted at 18-25 year olds who are interested in social enterprise. The main purpose of the conference is to educate young people about social enterprise through learning by doing: the conference takes students through the process of developing their own social enterprise model to solve a community issue. By the end of the conference, participants are empowered with the experience of being social entrepreneurs and have gained the skills and knowledge to make their model a reality.

About the role

As the Conference Manager, you will be managing a team to develop and run IMPACT’s premier annual event: the National Conference. You will have the opportunity to shape the vision, content and style for IMPACT’s 2018 Conference in collaboration with your team and the QLD State Director. Your role will be an exciting blend of team leadership, partnership development with universities and other organisations, event design, and building connections with social entrepreneurs.

Position: Executive Position / Location: Brisbane, Queensland
Reporting to: QLD State Director / Requirements: Apply for a Blue Card
Duration: 1 year, September 2017-18. / Time Commitment: 10-15 hours

Time commitment

Approximately 10-15 hours per week. This will vary over time, with closer to 15 hours required in weeks that involve lots of liaison with event partners and other key stakeholders. You can definitely expect 15 hours per week in the month before the Annual Conference (which usually occurs early or mid-August).

IMPACT does not expect team members to volunteer during university end-of-semester exam blocks.

Key objectives

The primary responsibility of the Conference Manager is to create an exciting Conference that appeals to university students and encourages them to think with a socially entrepreneurial mindset. Additionally, it means developing networks and partnerships with universities, non-profits and businesses that support social enterprise education for young people.

To do this, the role involves…

●Mentorship: Providing guidance, support and training to a team of 3 Conference Fellows to help them develop a quality skillset in communication with stakeholders, event management, approaching sponsorship and leadership.

●Creativity and Vision: Shaping the design of the 2018 Conference with your team will include discussions and execution of a theme, Conference content, and desired outcomes for participants.

●Partnership Development: Meeting with universities, non-profits and businesses to secure funding and / or ticket sales for the National Conference.

●Event Management: Using attention to detail, clear communication, and a supportive mindset to bring the IMPACT Conference together with your team.

●Collaboration with social entrepreneurs: You and your team will tap into IMPACT’s network in the social enterprise sector, and also develop your own, to secure high-quality speakers, panelists and / or judges for the National Conference.

We’re looking for people with…

● Experience leading or being part of a team that ran a large project

● Experience running events

● Strong organisational and time management skills

● Strong written and verbal communication skills

● Resilience: you’re not afraid of a challenge

● Knowledge, understanding of, or interest in the social enterprise sector (you don’t have to be an expert!)

You don’t have to tick ‘yes’ to all these things, the most important thing we want from our new recruits is determination, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn on the go!

Our Expectations
IMPACT firmly believes in creating a valuable experience for our volunteers, and we know that volunteering is a two-way process. As a result, we promise to provide you with an opportunity to grow and develop new skills (see below). In return, we expect IMPACT members to communicate with us clearly, openly and regularly, to complete set tasks in accordance with deadlines, to work well autonomously, to attend all meetings where reasonably possible, and to act responsibly around young people.

What you get out of it

●Opportunities and support to develop innovation, project management, communication, content design, collaboration and entrepreneurial skills

●Fun working with a team of young people passionate about creating change

●Expansion of your network by collaborating with stakeholders in the social enterprise and education space

●Mentorship and professional development from the IMPACT Team and our supporters in the social change sector
