Course Description:

This semester course will teach and review the computer keyboard to improve techniques, speed, and accuracy. Basic format of informal and formal documents used in a business or personal setting will be covered. Students will review and practice effective study skills, will be introduced to requirements for research and correct report formatting, while also learning effective ways to research using the internet and Media Center. Spreadsheet and presentation software skills will be covered utilizing Excel and PowerPoint. Students will begin exploring careers and employment skills while discovering careers that match their interests.

Prerequisite: None—this is a required class for all freshmen

Software: Microsoft Office 2007

Materials:

Netbook, 3-ring binder (provided), notebook paper, pen/pencil, highlighter, handbook

Course Fee:

$15.00(binder, paper, and gaggle account)

MPO’s:

1.build keyboarding speed and accurate keyboarding skills using the touch method

2.refine proofreading skills and correctly use proofreaders’ marks

3.identify the major parts of a personal computer and its hardware and software components

4.key the number and symbol keys by touch

5.operate the numeric keypad by touch

6.identify and demonstrate an understanding of keyboarding facts

7.apply correct spacing when using punctuation

8.specify and apply various applications of word processing

9.keyboard straight copy, script, and rough draft copy—1’ timings

10. format business letters and memos

11. format a research paper with special features that meet the standards of the PTHS English Department

12.enter data and format cells using spreadsheet software

13.create simple cell formulas and charts using spreadsheet software

14.create and format a PowerPoint presentation

15.properly deliver a PowerPoint presentation

16.use the Internet and various credible websites to research

17.use e-mail to enhance academic performance

18.list and discuss various careers

19.create and format an on-line career portfolio (Discover)

20.review, learn, refine, and demonstrate effective study skills.
