Read Hebrews 13:7-25

1)What does the author of Hebrews ask of his readers in Hebrews 13:7? What commonality is held by the leaders of Hebrews 11:1-40 and 12:1-3? Why would the author of Hebrews want the readers to imitate these people and not others? (Consider Hebrews 3:7-12, 3:19, 12:16-17)

2)According to Acts 20:28, 1 Timothy 3:1-7, and Titus 1:5-9, what were the responsibilities and requirements for 1st century church leaders? In regard to the leaders, why would the author give the warning in Hebrews 13:17 that leaders are those "who will have to give an account"? (Also consider James 3:1)

Day 2 / THEN

Read Hebrews 13:7-25

3)When reading Hebrews 13:9, what strange teachings was the author warning the readers from? (Consider 2 Cor. 11:3-4 and 2 Tim 4:3-4) Now include verse 10 with Hebrews 13:9. How is the author warning his readers in regards to the Old Testament? (Consider Hebrews 9:9-10)

4)What things might the author be referring to in Hebrews 13:21 that would equip the readers? (Consider John 14:26, Eph 4:11-12, and 2 Tim. 3:16-17)

Read Ephesians 1:13.Thank God for equipping you with His Word and the Holy Spirit.

Day 3 / ALWAYS

  • From the passage, extract the principle or principles that are true for all time.
  • The truth may be directed to Christians or people in general.
  • These statements generally contain words like “People,”“God’s People”or “Christians”and not contain words like “I”or “us.”

5)Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." In regard to remembering the leaders of the past (OT, NT, and early church), how is this statement always relevant to Christians today?

6)Read 1 Corinthians 16:15. Besides a commitment to obedience, what is required in one’s character to willingly and joyfully submit to the oversight of spiritual leaders? (Consider 1 Thess. 5:12-13; 1 Peter 5:5)

Read 2 Thessalonians 3:1. Take this time to pray for your church leaders and their desires to spread the Word of the Lord.

Day 4 / ALWAYS

Read Hebrews 13:7-25

7)Read 2 Timothy 4:3 and 2 Corinthians 11:3. How is the reality of these verses seen in the culture today? What should Christians always be doing to make sure their church is teaching sound doctrine? (Remember Hebrews 13:7-25 and Acts 17:11)

8)Read John 15:4-5. What are the three “always” truths found in the last three sentences of this passage? How should this dependence on Christ for effective Christian living express itself in people's everyday lives?

Read 2 Timothy 4:1-2. With so many oppositions, pray that your pastors would continue to teach sound doctrine.

Day 5 / NOW

  • Based on the “always“statements you discovered, determine practical and personal plans, whichyou can work on in your own life.
  • These plans generally should be ones that go into effect “right now”and contain words like “I,”“me,”“my,”or names of people you interact with frequently.
  • Good “now’statements drive Christians to prayer.

9)Clearly, one must choose a church and spiritual leaders with care. But what would you say to someone who claims that because of “caution” he has decided to not have any spiritual leaders in his life?

10)Read 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13. List the names of some Christians who God has placed “over you in the Lord” and who lead you in the study and practice of God’s word. What specific things can you do this week to make their job a joy and not a burden?

11) To avoid the trap of Hebrews 13:9, consistent and quality Bible study is necessary. What are some of the obstacles you encounter when attempting to study God’s word in on a consistent and regular schedule and in a quality manner?

12)Over the course of studying Hebrews, how as your personal Bible study and your understanding of theology and Christian doctrine progressed? What will you do to keep this going?
