Commanding Officer’s Message

Happy New Year from the 67thPrecinct! I am very happy to report that we have had a decrease in crime in 2010. I do feel strongly that with your continued help, we can see a continued drop in crime this coming year. I plan to meet with all key people in the community to discuss and share some ideas that I have for a successful 2011. Targeting youth crime is one of our many objectives that we must focus on to diminish the amount of violent crime that exists in this community. Continued community interaction and continued participation in various NYPD programs will keep the link between police and the community strong and effective. We thank you all for your continued support.

The New NYPD Blue in the 67th Precinct

On Monday, December 27th, 2010 a class of new police officers graduated from the Police Academy at Madison Square Garden. Twenty eight of those officers are now newly assigned to the 67th Precinct. An orientation was held for these new officers in the conference room of the precinct where these young men and women were given their assignments and were introduced to key figures from the Precinct and from our Community. Councilman Jumanni Williams conveyed the importance of maintaining the Department’s theme of continued courteous, professional, and respectful service that we provide to the public everyday. Other speakers who gave words of encouragement were the President of the 67th Precinct Community Council, Patricia Reddock, the District Manager of Community Board # 17, Ms. Sharif Fraser, Assemblyman Nick Perry, and Canon Howard K. Williams of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church.

During their orientation the new officers received a good sense of the culture and demographics of the newly formed Impact area that they will be patrolling. This new Impact area encompasses Church Avenue from Nostrand Avenue to East 52nd Street which covers a large commercial area where the precinct has experienced a number of shooting and robbery incidents. These officers will be out practicing a zero tolerance policy to suppress these violent crimes in the area, so when you are out and about in the area, smile and greet your new neighborhood cops.

Operation Safe Cycle

As East Flatbush continues to expand the bicycle routes throughout the community it is incumbent upon the 67th Precinct to ensure the safety of all motorists and bicyclists. As a result of the growing number of bicycle related accidents throughout the city the NYPD has implemented “OPERATION SAFE CYCLE.” This operation is designed to increase the safety of all pedestrians and cyclists through education and targeted enforcement. Pamphlets and informational flyers will be distributed throughout the community explaining some of the legal codes of the Vehicle and Traffic Law and the NYC Traffic Rules and Regulations as it pertains to bicycles the vehicles which will be strictly enforced. Should anyone want this information regarding these laws, they may request this information from the 67th Precinct Community Affairs’ office.

The Council Corner

We give Greetings from the 67th Precinct Community Council. I am pleased to announce that our annual Children’s Christmas party was a great success. Over three hundred children attended and enjoyed games, dancing, and shared gifts. The event was held at Nazareth Hall and members of the council along with members of the Police Department helped to give away toys to needy boys and girls of East Flatbush. I would like to thank all of the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the event as successful as it was.

We would also like to share with you that every year the council takes a ride through the community for the purpose of judging how well decorated different blocks are for the Christmas season. This is a competition where the block associations would enter and dress up their block with Christmas lights, ornaments, and other various decorations. The blocks are judged on a number of points and are awarded a prize at our annual dinner dance. Of course, the more homes that participate in the competition, the better the entire block looks. There are 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners and any interested block associations are encouraged to participate in December. For further information you can call the Precinct Community Affairs unit.

Cop of the Month

On Sunday, October 24th, 2010 at 3:45 AM, Police Officer Ricardo Joseph along with Police Officer Timothy O’Brien and their supervisor, Sergeant Aidiniou, were surveying a large crowd in front of a known problematic nightclub in the vicinity of Farragut Road and Schenectady Avenue when they observed a male with a drawn firearm advancing towards an intended target. At that time, the officers established firearms control and confronted the armed individual stating in loud and clear command “POLICE DON’T MOVE, DROP YOUR WEAPON.” The armed individual was then apprehended and the firearm was recovered without incident.

As a result of his excellent tactics and disciplined firearms control, Police Officer Joseph was able to prevent a potentially fatal incident. There is no doubt that East Flatbush is a safer place to live and work as a result of the hard work and dedication by officers such as Police Officer Joseph and for this reason Police Officer Joseph is awarded the “COP OF THE MONTH” for December.
