What is the purpose of Trusted Trainer access?

The purpose of the Trusted Trainer access program is to support trainers in developing the knowledge and skills of people who are registered for CNIB Digital Library service so that they can use the service independently, without an intermediary.

Trusted Trainers may use their access solely for training purposes. Access is limited to the time required to conduct the training, in person or remotely, in real time, or to prepare lesson plans or exercises.

The Trusted Trainer access program is not intended for people who want to assist CNIB Library clients on an ongoing basis. For ongoing assistance, please contact Reader Services at 1-800-268-8818 or .

Who can be a Trusted Trainer?

A Trusted Trainer may be a CNIB staff member or volunteer, or a teacher, librarian or other appropriate staff member at a school, library or other organization who is responsible for training activities.

What do I receive as a Trusted Trainer?

As a Trusted Trainer you will receive a limited account for the CNIB Digital Library. The account is valid for one year and is renewable on an annual basis. The account provides access to most features of the CNIB Digital Library.

Trainers working with children six to 14 years old can also access some features of the Children’s Discovery Portal. To ensure the safety of our young clients, access to chat, speak out and multiplayer games is restricted to eligible children and site moderators.

Trusted Trainers also receive important service alerts by e-mail and Digital Times, our quarterly newsletter that includes service announcements, recommended reading, and tips on how to use the CNIB Digital Library.

What may I not do as a Trusted Trainer?

A Trusted Trainer account does not permit you to receive books by mail. Any holds you place as part of your training sessions will not be fulfilled.

Trusted Trainers may not use the reference tools (e.g., Ebsco databases, encyclopedia) for professional purposes. CNIB is licensed to offer these resources to its immediate users only. Please ask your organization’s resource centre or public library about obtaining access.

The use of content is also restricted because the CNIB Digital Library contains works in alternative format that were produced or acquired for the exclusive use of persons with perceptual disabilities through an exception in the Canadian Copyright Act (R.S.C. C-42, S. 32) or by agreement with the rights holder.

How can I help someone if I’m not a Trusted Trainer?

To help someone select and order books, you can search the Library catalogue and then copy and paste call numbers or search results into an e-mail message. Go to visunet.cnib.ca and activate the “Search the Library as a guest” link. Send your message to or call us toll-free at 1-800-268-8818. Select option 1, "To leave a list of books you wish to receive." Be sure to include the name and address of the person who should receive the books.
