CLUB ACTIVITIES AND DATES FOR YOUR CALENDAR

  • March 01 – Special Executive Board Meeting at 5:30pm at Erie Restaurant
  • March01 - Dinner Meeting – 6:30pm – Erie Restaurant – First reading of the officer candidates for 2017-18 and nominations from the floor will be accepted.
  • March 11&12 – BBA Trade Fair – contact Joe Rutkowski if you want to help in the booth. Also Todd & Trudy Hershberger need help with the vision screening.
  • March 15 – Dinner Meeting – 6:30pm – Erie Restaurant – speaker tonight will be Bedford School Board Member Ron Koch.
  • March29 – Executive Board Meeting – 6:30pm – Bedford Township Hall.

FEBRUARYEXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

  • Because of a lack of a quorum, no official business was conducted by the Executive Board. President Jim Neumeyer scheduled a special Board Meeting to be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 5:30pm preceding the dinner meeting at the Erie Restaurant.

BITS &PIECES

  • At the January Board Meeting, Dr. Jeff Chapman was approved to be honored with an Honorary Membership in the Bedford Lion’s Club. His induction ceremony took place at the Lions Michigan Forum on February 18th.
  • A Chair is still needed for the Relay for Life.
  • John Cioroch has volunteered to Chair the Senior Night Out. He has decided to attend the Bedford Community Players presentation of “Oliver”. They will go to the dress rehearsal on Thursday, April 6th at 8:00pm. As always club members are needed to help.
  • Pat Karmol will Chair the Organ Donor Day that will take place on Wednesday, April 12th. Anyone wishing to help please contact Pat.
  • The Installation Banquet this year will be held at the Hollywood Casino on Thursday June 15th. Look for details in later issues of The Lion’s Roar.
  • Denzil Bell, John Cioroch and Jim Neumeyer attended the Lions Michigan Forum that was held in February.
  • “300 Club” drawings have begun – The early bird winner is Walt Wilburn; he won a gift certificate to Northwood Villa. The first $200 winnersare Gary Holmes and Charlotte Michalak.
  • Both Andrew Brown and Rick Steiner have been working on the Third Annual Bedford Lions Club Golf Outing. It will be held this summer on August 12th at Giant Oak Golf Course. Watch for details in later issues of the newsletter.
  • Mary Kay Thayer has scheduled a presentation of the local winners of the LCI Peace Poster Contest to be honored at the Bedford Public Schools Board Meeting on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 7:00pm.
  • Please remember to contact Erie Restaurant before each and every Dinner Meeting to let them know if you and any guests will be attending. Either send them an email at or call them at 734-848-4935. Thank you.

CORRESPONDENCE

  • The Francis Family YMCA sent a thank you for our generous donation of $2,500.00 to their Capital Fund Drive.
  • The Monroe County Opportunity Program (MCOP) sent a thank you for our donation. MCOP served 13,268 needy people in Monroe County with food, housing and aging & disability resources; of that this past year they helped 590 residents in Bedford.
  • Hospice of Northwest Ohio wanted to thank everyone for our donation that will help them to continue to provide compassionate care to those entrusted to them.
  • Penrickton Center for the Blind sent a thank you for our club’s generous gift of $5,000.00 towards the PDG Glen Grosteffon Memorial Room and our annual donation of $2,000.00 for the blind, multi disabled children that they serve.
  • The Bed Race to Aid Children sent a thank you for our club’s donation to be used for their “Now I Lay Me Down” program which provides beds, linens and a stuffed animal to needy children in Monroe County.
  • New Beginnings Mercy House, a home for unwed mothers, sent us a thank you for the $2,500.00 donation to their ministry. In 2016, they served 1,755 clients and had 101 babies born unto this ministry.

The Bedford Township Leo Club was officially organized on October 30, 1975 at the Temperance Rotary Hall; there were 15 Charter Members. The Leo Club is open to all young men and women ages 13 through 18. The Leo Program was announced by Lions Club International (LCI) early in 1968 with the aim of the program to give young people the opportunity to gain experience and develop leadership in the areas of community service. The Charter President of the Leo Club was Judy Cioroch, Vice President was Tom Frechette, Secretary was Pam Cioroch and Treasurer was Cindy Zeiler.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

  • SERVICE COMMITTEE–Kirk Davis – reportedthey are helping a Bedford resident get new glasses, helping a mother and daughter in Temperance with Foodtown gift cards and a senior woman in Monroe get hearing aids.
  • RESALE SHOP COMMITTEE –Larry O’Dell – reported that members are needed to help at the counter on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 3:00pm and 6:00pm.
  • MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE - Rick Steiner – no report.
  • SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE – John Satkowski – reported they met on February 1stto review requirements of applicants and start the process. This year we will award ten $1,500 scholarships to graduating seniors. Applications have been sent to the high school Counseling Office.
  • NOMINATING COMMITTEE– Kent Cousino– reported they met on Feb. 2nd at the library and will bring their list of candidates to the March 1st Dinner Meeting.
  • LEO LIAISON – Troy Forgette – no report.
  • PROGRAM COMMITTEE –Bill Zeiler – reported that Bedford School Board Member Ron Koch will be the speaker at the March 15th Dinner Meeting.
  • PUBLICITY COMMITTEE–Keith HolmesMike Smithreported they have submitted articles to the local papers and the District Newsletter. The more pictures and information they receive about club activities the more articles they can get published. This is a great way to tell the public what we do.
  • FINANCE COMMITTEE–Garnet Francis –reported they will be meeting soon to discuss next year’s budget.
  • CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE –Denzil Bell – reportedthey will soon be bringing recommendations to the Board for their review.
  • FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE – John Satkowski & Kevin Thomas – no report.
  • KIDSIGHT CAMERA COMMITTEE –Trudy & Todd Hershberger – reported they will have the camera at the BBA Trade Fair for vision screening. They need members to help volunteer on both Saturday and Sunday.
