CLASS TITLE:SANITATION AND SAFETY SUPERVISOR - SES

ALLOCATION FACTOR(S)

This is work supervising Sanitation and Safety Specialists. The primary duty of the employee(s) in the position(s) allocated to this class is to spend the majority of time communicating with, motivating, training and evaluating employees, planning and directing their work; and having the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward or discipline subordinate employees or to effectively recommend such actions.

  • Motivates employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed.
  • Plans work loads, work flows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
  • Evaluates employees through establishing evaluation criteria and responsibilities and meeting regularly with employees to ensure the established criteria are met.
  • Trains employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in staff meetings.
  • Directs the work of employees to ensure best use of time and resources.
  • Supervises the inspection of and/or assigns the inspection of various establishments and facilities such as public lodging and food service establishments for compliance with safety and sanitation regulations, fire safety, LP gas rules and regulations, and other safety and sanitation related areas.
  • Investigates food-induced illnesses and environmental sanitation nuisance complaints.
  • Assists in collecting delinquent fines, penalties and license fees when necessary.
  • Recommends procedures for rodent and vermin control.
  • Gathers evidence and participates in legal actions.
  • Maintains records and files of inspections.
  • Confers with and educates the public, builders, owners, public officials and civic groups concerning disease control, sanitation and health regulations.
  • Issues health licenses to public lodging establishments and public food service establishments.
  • Conducts field studies to monitor health or sanitation standards.
  • Provides consultation and prepares reports dealing with safety and sanitation problems.
  • Coordinates activities with federal, state and municipal environmental safety and health agencies.
  • Directs and coordinates the workload of the Sanitation and Safety Specialists.
  • Interprets and explains the significance of public health laws, rules and other related sanitation and safety standards; recommends state certification of facilities that satisfactorily comply with these laws.
  • Testifies at court and administrative hearings and interacts with legal staff, complaint and board offices, State Attorney's office and other regulatory agencies.
  • Serves administrative complaints, notice to show cause, and final orders.
  • Maintains inspection activity data and prepares administrative reports.
  • Compiles records for program evaluation.
  • Establishes program objectives and sets priorities.
  • Reviews the work of subordinates through observation, reports, and conferences to ascertain that public health laws, regulations, and ordinances are being administered in accordance with established policies and procedures; alters work assignments as necessary; evaluates the work; and assists with difficult problems.
  • Supervises the inspection of and/or assigns the inspection of food establishments such as supermarkets, convenience stores, food processors and warehouses for compliance with sanitation, cleanliness, labeling and other food safety regulations and related requirements.
  • Performs related work as required.
