Description: You are trying to figure out how the below table was created. You know that you are given the number of points for each touchdown (F2 – no extra points considered) and each field goal (G2). The column E information from rows 5 to 11 have a sequence of numbers that indicate the number of times you have scored a touchdown or field goal. Column F of the same range (rows 5 to 11) are the number of points earned for the column E number of touchdowns, and the same for column G with field goals. So if you score 4 touchdowns, you have earned 24 points (F8 is 4 scores at 6 points a piece) and if you score 2 field goals, you have earned 6 points (G6 is 2 scores at 3 points a piece).

DESCRIPTION (each question is worth 4 points): Excel University is looking at the statistics for the football team from last season. The given data is in gray. The number of points for a touchdown (no extra points considered) and field goal are in columns G4 and H4 respectively. The information for each of the seven games is in the range G7:H13 where the number of touchdowns is in column G and the number of field goals is in column H.

18. I want to find the average number of times the team scored this season. The Excel formula I wrote was =AVERAGE(SUM(G7:H13)) which is syntactically correct. Will the formula give the correct answer? Why or why not?

NO, because SUM returns a single value and the average of a single value is itself, thus this formula returns the sum of the range (not the average)

19. Notice that the average total points scored in a game for the season is 17.6 (see cell I14). If I use the “decrease decimal” icon and decrease the decimal by 1 position, then type the formula =COUNTIF(I14,18) in cell I17, what will be the answer in cell I17? Explain your answer.

ZERO, because even though the format of I14 is changed to 18, the precision is still 17.6 and it’s the precision that is checked when comparing I14 to 18 in the COUNTIF
