Checklist for The Crucible Theme Essay

_____ I have an interesting introduction that explores my theme (remember: either mention both The Crucible AND your outside connection, or neither of them)

_____ I have transitions between my introduction, my Crucible connections, and my societal connection—it is clear how they all relate to the same theme and that they are all working together

_____ I do not use first person!!! Only 3rd person =)

_____ There are NO slash words in my paper (really, very, good, bad, positive, negative, thing, etc.—see wiki)

_____ I have parenthetically cited the page number for each quote from The Crucible

Frustrated by Elizabeth’s suspicion and by his own sense of guilt, John retorts, “Oh, Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer!” (55).

_____ Each of my quotes is INTEGRATED, not just plopped in my paper

3 Ways to Integrate Quotes:

1.  Use an introductory clause/phrase:

Frustrated by Elizabeth’s suspicion and by his own sense of guilt, John retorts, “Oh, Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer!” (55).

2.  Incorporate the quote into your structure (Incorporated Structure):

In telling Elizabeth that her “justice would freeze beer,” (55) John latently expresses his inability to forgive himself.

3.  Use interrupted structure:

“Oh, Elizabeth,” snaps John, “your justice would freeze beer!” (55).

_____ I have 4 relevant and powerful quotes from The Crucible

_____ I have used and cited two relevant and reliable outside sources for my societal connection to theme (quote each source)

_____ All of the words in my speech (other than quotes) are entirely my own and express my voice and personality

_____ I have practiced reading my essay out loud to check for sentence fluency (variety of beginnings, variety of lengths, and rhythm) because I know it is important to my grade this time around!
