Charity marks 5th year with rebrand

Children’s literacy charity, Doorstep Library Network is marking its 5th year anniversary with a rebrand. The new brand will feature on their revamped website and throughout their marketing programwhich includes an illustrated storybook being developed to support the rebrand.

“We’re all about giving children in disadvantaged areas the opportunity to aspire and grow; we wanted a brand that betterreflected our vision and emphasisedthe transformational power of books to literally and figuratively take children places. Our fifth year anniversary offered us the ideal chance to review our brand and adopt one that communicates the marvel and magic of stories,” says Katie Bareham, Project Manager.

Doorstep Library benefitted from the vision and expertise of Clout Branding an award-winning brand and design consultancy. Creative Director, Mike Smith, explains, “The way that books, stories and literacy affect every one of us – not just as children, but throughout the course of our lives – was core to our thinking. Like lots of charities, their brand was focused around the stuff they do well and less on the impact of their work. We helped them to widen the appeal of their story by highlighting thepositive and transformative effects of their work across society. And as they are storytellers, it made complete sense to put a more compelling narrative at the heart of their brand. To encapsulate this, we centred the brand around ‘Words take you places’. This immediately suggests how books, stories and words can change lives. And like any good brand story we started it at the logotype - an open book which takes the form of an arrow on a journey. As part of the visual development of the brand, we created a series of charming storybook illustrations; these are being used to form their own storybook online and in print."

The work of Doorstep Library is needed now more than ever. According to the recent Read on. Get on. Campaign*, thousands of children leave primary school every year unable to read adequately. Low income children are the worst affected with 40% not reading well by the age of 11 – almost double the rate of their betteroff peers. In addition, almost a quarter of 11 year olds have fewer than 10 books in their home. “The odds are stacked against children in our disadvantaged neighbourhoods and Doorstep Library is ideally situated to fight these trends. We bring books direct into homes where reading for pleasure is often a foreign concept, associated exclusively with school and “work”.We are encouraging children to celebrate books and embrace reading as a pastime,” says Bareham.

Doorstep Library has benefited from the support of former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis who has been a long standing volunteer with the charity. ‘’As a longtime local resident, mother of three and now a grandmother, I was immediately drawn to Doorstep and their mission to bring books into homes locally. It’s an incredibly special way to spend time with the children we visit and I feel privileged to have this chance to give back so directly and inspire the next generation,” explains Miss Ellis.
