Chapter 5: Psychodynamic and Neo-Freudian Theories

Directions: Use the following website to answer the questions below. Once on this site click on Personality Synopsis and then look at chapter 5- Psychodynamic and Neo-Freudian Theories. This is due in class tomorrow.

1.Read section 1 and tell why the term Neo-Freudian is relevant. List some of the major neo-Freudians.

2.Read about Alfred Adler and his ideas. Take some notes on his major ideas and decide whether you agree with his major notions about inferiority complex and about birth order.

3.Discuss Jung’s differences with Freud, specifically his references tocollective unconscious influences personality.

4.Review Erik Erikson’s 8 stages of psychosocial development by creating a chartin your own words that shows each of the stages and what the major struggle was over.

5.Discuss Karen Horney’s feminist psychology as it related to Freud’s theory. Be sure to include to notion of womb envy in your response.

6.Horney argued that, “She identified three ways of dealing with the world that are formed by an upbringing in a neurotic family: Moving Toward People, Moving Against People, and Moving Away From People.” Describe each of the three ways briefly.
