Program Eligibility/Requirements

The following are the minimal requirements needed of students BEFORE applying for the ZADDFellowsCareer Development Program.Final decisions and selection of student awards will be made by the programs Fellowship Educational Oversight Committee (FEOC).

  • United States Citizenship.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, averaged over all academic terms at the time of application.
  • Successfully complete the application form, including relevant essay questions.
  • Major in a HS-STEM priority field.
  • Must have applied to or been accepted into a graduate program offering studies within a Homeland Security priority field.
  • Apply through FAZD Center and major in priority HS-STEM graduate field.
  • Willingness to sign award contract with one year commitment to employment in a non-DHS funded HS-STEM occupation.

The following are the minimal requirements needed of students AFTER acceptance of the FAZD NNF awards.

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, averaged over all academic terms while in the program. Students whose GPA falls below 3.0 in any one semester or quarter will forfeit the balance of their award.
  • Major in a HS-STEM field.
  • Attend the annual DHS Scholars and Fellows Orientation meeting in Washington, DC (TBD).
  • Enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university located in the United States or its territories during the appointment. However, this condition would not prohibit a student from performing some of their study or research at a foreign institution (with prior approval from the FAZD Center).
  • Obtain a faculty mentor in the department where studies will be performed.
  • Conduct a 10-week, continuous research summer internship at DHS or a DHS- affiliated facility in an HS-STEM priority field.
  • Attend all activities of the Hispanic Leaders in Agriculture and the Environment (HLAE) program.
  • Attend one annual meeting hosted by the FAZD Center or CEEZAD.
  • Fulfill one-year, full-time service requirement in a relevant Homeland Security- science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (HS-STEM) field. The one-year service commitment may be served at a DHS-approved STEM venue—including universities—immediately following the term of the assistanceship. Options for completing this service requirement at a DHS-approved STEM venue include full-time service for: (1) one continuous year; or (2) two six-month periods at no more than two locations.
