Activity 2: Treasure Hunt:

Ahoy! Me hearty’s! Ye be seeking to hide ye booty an’ plunder from thar’ scallywag classmates?

Ye prepar to draw a treasure map of this here land.

Avast! First, thar be some rules ye need to foller…

1) Straight, strong arrows be ye guide!

2) Nay, no, ne’re walk in curvy lines or swaggles!

Vectors, indeed, ye buccaneers!

Arrrr! Scurvy dog landlubbers! What are ye waitin’ fer?

Translation….

Today your group will be choosing a spot to hide a treasure. Next you need to create a set of instructions and a map that shows the path one must travel to reach the treasure. Do not tell other groups where you plan to hide the treasure!

Standard Activity Instructions (In classroom using a numbered line)

1. Create a set of written directions and a treasure map (for extra credit) using a meter stick and graph paper.

2. Write down a written description of the position of the treasure.

3. A list of directions from an object in the classroom to the treasure using the meter marks on the ground showing the distance for the treasure hunter. (YOU NEED TO INCLUDE THE TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELED!)

4. Give the treasure hunter a hint about the actual displacement of the treasure from your starting point. (YOUR NEED TO INCLUDE THE TOTAL DISPLACEMENT!)

5. (Extra Credit): A map that shows the path (use graph paper). Identify the starting point (START) and mark the treasure with an “X.”

SAMPLE “DIRECTIONS”:

**If your group’s treasure is discovered from your directions, both YOUR GROUP’S MEMEMBERS and the TREASURE HUNTER’S will be rewarded with another piece of prize!

3. Write a list of directions from an object in the classroom to the treasure using the x and y coordinate set of axis in the middle of the room. Make sure you show the distance for the treasure hunter. (YOU NEED TO INCLUDE THE TOTAL DISTANCE TRAVELED!)

4. Give the treasure hunter a hint about the actual displacement of the treasure from your starting point. (YOUR NEED TO INCLUDE THE TOTAL DISPLACEMENT!)
