TABLE TOPICS
EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT TABLE TOPICS, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK.
Buy borrow or steal two handbooks provided by Toastmasters that should be part of your library. Here are some comments from them
1The THINK FAST! handbook states:
"Table Topics provides you with the opportunity to practice thinking and speaking on your feet ...you learn how to present your thoughts in a clear organized manner with a minimum of preparation."
2A Toastmaster Wears Many Hats handbook offers the following suggestions
a.Select questions that will inspire speakers
to expound on them, give their opinions,
etc.
b.Don't make the questions too long or
complicated - phrase them in such
a way that the speakers will know clearly
what you want them to talk about.
c.Keep your comments short. Your job is to
give others a chance to speak, not to give
a series of mini-talks yourself.
d.Call on speakers at random. Avoid going
around the room in the order in which
people are sitting.

If you become accustomed to remaining calm when called upon for an impromptu topic, you
will discover that the predicament is not nearly as frightening as you anticipated.
Fortunately, in the Toastmaster's lexicon, Creative and Imaginative minds are words that tower above all others, and they are necessary in the process of preparing and delivering a speech.
Professor Pearl Hogrefe compared those types of minds to "a miner, refiner and goldsmith combined. The miner digs out nuggets of truth from the stores of his experience; the refiner separates gold from dross, and finds techniques and patterns; the goldsmith then shapes the gold into artistic units".
As the Table Topics Master, avoid lengthy introductions of the theme or of the speakers and avoid remarks on what they say.
Guide the discussion ... avoiding mundane topics, and introducing stimulating, realistic and useful topics."

Georgo Torok, CTM wrote: "When responding to Table Topics, make a quick decision on whether you love the question or hate it. Then go with your feelings. Don't sit on the fence. Be passionate. You will be more creative, more memorable and have more fun.
Mark Twain stated that "It usually takes three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech."
Unfortunately, we have no such luxury; we have only 10 to 20 seconds to think "on our feet" before we start speaking on a topic for
about two minutes

FOR SPEAKERS OF THE DAY
Please remember to bring your manual when you are giving a speech.
Your Evaluator will know what your goals are,
and the VP of Education will sign your manual.
You and the club will benefit from seeing you progress with each speech.

Farrell Cooley suggests that all members presenting a speech have a typed introduction
that is given to the Toastmaster of the evening prior to the start of the meeting.
He feels that the handwritten ones are often unreadable.
As a speaker, it is advisable that you prepare
the Introduction that you want the Toastmaster to present.
Include the speech number, the objectives, the Title and a brief summary of your intentions and
who you are.

LECTERN PROTOCOL
When you are in charge at the lectern, do not leave it unattended. If you need something, ask another member to retrieve it for you.
And as a courtesy, shake hands with the person at the lectern, when you approach or leave the
lectern.

SOME PHILOSOPHICAL ADVICE FROM TRALFAMADORE
I recently channeled the following communication from the Tralfamadorian Ambassador
(known on Earth as Bill Bax:
“The most important thing I learned on Tralfamadore was that when a person dies
he/she only appears to die. He/she is still very much alive in the past, so it is very silly
for people to cry at the funeral.
All moments, past, present and future, always have existed, always will exist.
The Tralfamadorians can look at all the different moments just the way we can look at a stretch
of the Rocky Mountains, for instance. They can see how permanent all the moments are,
and they can look at any moment that interests them.
It is just an illusion we have here on earth that one moment follows another one,
like beads on a string, and that once a moment is gone, it is gone forever.
