BEIJING
Beijing, which is also abbreviated as "Jing," is the capital of the People's Republic of China. The political and cultural center of the country, it is also one of the international communication hubs of China. Beijing is located on the northwest edge of the North China Plain, adjoining Tianjin City to its east and Hebei Province to its north, west and south. Beijing has 16 districts and two counties under its jurisdiction, covering an area of 16,807.8 square kilometers.
Human activities began in the Beijing area some half a million years ago. The recorded history of Beijing as a city can date back to more than 3,000 years ago. In 1271 Kublai Khan renamed the city and decided to build it as the capital of his empire, and since then, Beijing served as a national capital for more than 700 years, being one of China's seven great ancient capitals. In this famed historical and cultural city, cultural heritage sites and scenic spots are found everywhere. Ancient palace groups, temples, parks, ancient pagodas with rock carvings, imperial gardens and tombs, former residences of historic personages throng the city side by side with modern buildings of museums and memorial halls.
Beijing has a total of 7,309 cultural heritage sites, including 42 under state protection and 222 under municipal protection. The Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian are on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Beijing has over 200 scenic spots open to visitors, such as the Forbidden City, the Beihai Park, the Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs (Shisanling), the Temple of Heaven (Tiantan Park), the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian, the Great Wall, Yonghegong Lamasery, Tanzhe Temple, Fragrant Hills, the Ruins of the Yuanmingyuan, the Eight Great Sites, Longqing Gorge, Shihua Cave and etc.
Beijing has a semi-humid climate with clearly cut four seasons: short spring and autumn and long winter and summer. The average annual temperature is 130C (averaging 25.20C in July, the hottest month, and 3.70C in January, the coldest month). The average annual rainfall is 507.7 millimeters and the frost-free period is 180-200 days.

Tianjin is located in the northeast of the North China Plain, facing the Bohai Sea in the east, and seated against Mt. Yanshan in the north. Its coastal line stretches about 133 km long. It covers an area of 11,305 square kilometers. The name of Tianjin first appeared in the early years of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty, meaning the ferry port used by an emperor. In 1404, it became a military position of strategic importance, and construction of city walls and garrison installations began.
The city is located in the middle latitudes on the east bank of the European-Asian continent, facing the Pacific. The monsoon circulating winds bring a sharp impact on the city. It has a semi-moist warm temperate continental monsoon climate, with an apparent feature of transit from continental climate to marine climate: there are four clearly divided seasons, but the duration of each is different; precipitation is not high, with uneven distribution over the year. The annual average temperature is 12.3 °C. The hottest month is July, during which the average temperature can reach 26 °C. January is the coldest month, its average temperatures being -4 °C. The yearly average rainfall is 550-680 mm, 80 percent of which is concentrated in summer.

The province is located in the northern part of the North China Plain extending into the Inner Mongolian Plateau. Beijing, the capital of China, and Tianjin, the important trading port in the north of China, are situated in the center of the province, although are not part of it. It adjoins Liaoning and Inner Mongolia in the north, Shanxi Province in the west and Henan and Shandong provinces in the south. The Bohai Sea lies to the east of the province. Its coastline extends 487 km, and the total area of the province is 190,000 square km.
The province lies in the temperate zone, with a continental monsoon climate. In most areas, the change of season is distinct, with yearly sunshine averaging 2,500–3,100 hours. The annual frost-free period lasts about 120 to 200 days; annual rainfall averages 300 to 800 mm. The monthly mean temperatures is 3 degrees C or below. The mean temperatures in July are 18 to 27 degrees C, with a clear-cut change of seasons.
The province is the only one in the country that boasts highlands, mountainous and hilly areas, plains, lakes and a coastline. Across the province, there are 304 ancient ruins and groups of ancient buildings including 58 key relics under state protection. The number of historical and cultural relics in the province ranks first in the country along with Shaanxi Province. The total number of natural and human cultural scenic sites ranks second nationally. They include the Chengde Summer Resort, Shanhaiguan Pass at the head of the Great Wall, Beidaihe holiday resort, the Eastern and Western Tombs of the emperors of the Qing Dynasty.
