OUR PRACTICE IS PROUD TO HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THEBREAST IMPLANT REGISTRY AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO CONTRIBUTING TO THENEW

AUSTRALIAN BREAST DEVICE REGISTRY

Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons Inc. has maintained a Breast Implant Registry (BIR) since 1998 to collect relevant patient, surgeon, procedural, and implant data relating to breast implants. Patients have been able to voluntarily contribute their data, at a cost of $25 per implant, and be contacted should there be any concerns regarding their breast implants. However the BIR has now been replaced by a new Commonwealth Government-funded registry. ASPS will continue to maintain the BIR legacy data and to administer patient access to their unique data stored on the Registry but and will no longer register new patients.

The new Australian Breast Device Registry will monitor the safety and quality of procedures involving implantable breast devices. It will contribute to our understanding of the long term safety of implanted breast devices and help to improve patient safety by capturing data on all Australian patients undergoing surgery with a breast implant or tissue expander.

Monash University’s School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine is working in collaboration with the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS) and Breast Surgeons of Australian & New Zealand Inc. (BreastSurgANZ) to implement the new Registry nationwide.

Your surgeon has previously contributed data to the BIR but does not yet have approval from an ethics committee to contribute your data to the ABDR. In anticipation of receiving this approval however, your surgeon would like to continue to offer you the option to have your data recorded following your breast implant procedure.

With your approval, your surgeon will complete the ABDR data collection form to capture data such as the reason for your surgery, the type of procedure, type of device and whether you’ve experienced any complications. Your surgeon will retain this information in strict confidence within your medical file within his/her practice.

Once ethics approval has been obtained your surgeon will forward your data to the ABDR. You will then receive a letter from the ABDR outlining key information about the Registry and what will be asked of you as a participant. If you would prefer to receive this letter via email rather than post, please ask your surgeon to note this on the form. You may notify your surgeon at any time that you do not want to be involved in the registry and elect to have your data destroyed.

It is important to note that participation in the ABDR is voluntary and there is NO COST to you. The care provided to you at this practice will not be affected in any way by your decision, regardless of whether you choose to participate in the Registry.

If you would like to request more detailed information about the ABDR please ask your surgeon or consult the website
