Australia & Berlin Arts Exchange Presents a Vibrant Mix of Arts Workshops, Music, Dance

Australia & Berlin Arts Exchange presents a vibrant mix of arts workshops, music, dance and performances. As well as learning forums for cultural exchange between Australian and Berlin artists and arts and culture leaders with disability.

Program was prepared by Arts Access Australia through intense cooperation with Berlin partners Berlinklusion – Network for Accessibility in Arts and Culture and Förderband e.V. - Kulturinitiative Berlin. Arts Access Australia (AAA) is Australia’s national peak body for arts and disability. We work to increase national and international opportunities and access for people with disability as artists, arts-workers, participants and audiences. Established in 1992, AAA is a disability-led company limited by guarantee.

Our CEO and at least 50% of our board members identify as a person with disability.

AAA provides three main services:

The Program

Australia & Berlin Arts Exchange October 9-20

Opening Ceremony, Tues 10.

The program will be officially launched at a small proceeding and will include performances from visiting Australian artists.

Stammtisch Artist Exchange, Wed 11.

Brotfabrik

Australian artists join a meeting of local artists to discuss access and inclusion at Brotfabrik café/pub.

Dancer Exchange, Thurs 12.

Uferstudios

Australian and Berlin dancers join dancing session of Tanzfähig Initiative at Uferstudios and exchange experiences.

Public events:

Art Workshop & Launch of Berlinklusion Network for Accessibility in Arts and Culture, aquarium, Fri 13. (6-9pm)

Australian contemporary dancer Anna Seymour in collaboration with Berlin based artists will conduct a participatory performance and workshop incorporating

sound, movement and visual art. The event will include a networking activity sponsored by Berlinklusion an international Network for Accessibility in Arts and Culture based in Berlin.

Art Workshop, Stephanus Stiftung (11am-3pm) & Pop-up Exhibition and Drumming Workshop-Performance, Brotfabrik (5-8pm), Sat 14.

Mixed-media art workshop between sculpture and painting co-led by Australian painter Chelle Destefano and Corry Siw Mirski, visual artist from Berlin at Stephanus Stiftung; Presentation of the workshop with pop-up exhibition at the gallery space of Brotfabrik followed by drumming workshop-performance by Australian drummers Andrew Hewitt and Josh Hogan (Rudely Interrupted). Everyone is welcome to attend and meet the Artists.

Meeting Place Forum (9am-5.30pm) & Performance (6-8pm), Podewil, Mon 16.

This all-day event will provide an inclusive learning space and critical platform to discuss and debate the latest in arts and disability. Followed by performance by Rudely Interrupted one of Australia’s most unique independent rock acts. To find out more visit:

What disability? We are just drummers from down under!, Just Music/Sky Live, Tue 17. (7-9pm)

Come and be inspired, hear the stories of 3 Australian drummers who have overcome the challenges and struggles of a disability to become successful drummers performing all over the world. Andrew Hewitt, Josh Hogan and Todd James will share their journeys, share their passions and play drums.

Closing Party & Performance, Alte Kantine Wedding, Thurs 19. 7pm

Everyone is welcome to join us in a celebration at Alte Kantine Wedding with performance by Australian contemporary dancer Anna Seymour, presentation of art project “Under My Tongue” by Australian performer Belinda Locke, DJ set by DJ Eltron, dance, and highlights from the festival.

Artist Profiles

Belinda Locke, Keynote Speaker

Theatre director, performer and arts leader Belinda Locke’s will be co-delivering the keynote address at the Meeting Place event at the Australia Berlin Arts Exchange with Australian Circus/Physical Theatre Performer, Sarah Houbolt.

Chelle Destefano, Mixed Media & Watercolour Artist

Chelle has exhibited at the Melbourne Art Gallery and had solo exhibitions in London and Paris. Her work was twice selected for Venice Biennale in 2015 and 2016, as well as the London Biennale 2017. Chelle has received numerous national and international awards, including ArtSlant 2016 Showcase Winner Finalist in ‘The Healing Power of Art Exhibition’, Manhattan, New York.

Anna Seymour, Contemporary Dancer

Anna received a Green Room nomination in 2016 for Best Performer in Black is the Colour, an Australian play in Auslan with English subtitles. Anna teaches dance workshops for Deaf children and youth and co-founded contemporary dance company The Delta Project.

Sarah Houbolt, Circus/Physical Theatre Performer

Sarah is an accomplished circus and physical theatre performer, specialising in aerials, acrobatics, hula hoop and side show. She trained and performed with Vulcana Women’s Circus and has worked on various projects in Australia and New Zealand. She is currently working on projects around blindness, the aesthetics of access, dance, as well as doing corporate entertainment.

Andrew Hewitt, Drummer, Teacher, Advocate

Andrew works as a successful Performing Artist, Drum Teacher, Motivational Speaker, Workshop Facilitator, and Disability Advocate and has performed at major arts festivals including Club Wild at the Sydney Opera House in 2004 and 2005. Andrew is one of the founding members of Can-Do Musos a global voice for musicians living with a disability from across the globe.

Rudely Interrupted, Indie Rock Act

Rudely Interrupted are one of Australia’s most unique independent rock acts, touring and releasing their brand of pitch perfect indie/rock/ love/pop anthem across the Globe. The band has toured around the world, and in 2008, they were the first independent band to receive an invitation to perform at the United Nations in New York City.
