Job purpose
To provide staff, student and external customers with a reliable, high quality childcare provision at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) to enable them to work/study in confidence.

Effective, comprehensive record keeping to enable accurate logging of children’s progress / D

Knowledge / Familiarity with the Early Years Foundation Stage
Understanding of safeguarding children, Special educational needs, and equal opportunities legislation
Understanding of manual handling principles and how to safely lift objects relating to nursery care (such as toys, small bikes, scooters) and children (0-6years old). / D

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role
To help your room meets all statutory (Ofsted) and management standards for the best practice care children
To assist in the development of positive, personal, yet at all times professional relationships and develop an understanding that they represent the Nursery and QMUL at all times
To ensure that all the children’s needs are met in a caring and efficient manner.
To assist the children with their hygiene needs including toileting and nappy changing in line with Nursery policy
To be able to lift reasonable loads including children using the principles of correct manual handling
To assist in planning and carrying out activities in line with the children’s developmental needs
To help prepare simple snacks and serve nutritious meals to the children
To follow the Nursery’s health and safety guidance to ensure a safe environment for the children and other adults
To assist in the setting up and clearing away of the children’s rooms throughout the day making sure the room is ready for the children’s requirements
To provide a positive role model to the children at all times acting in accordance with the Nursery’s philosophy and QMUL’s equal opportunity policies
To provide parents and carers with honest, useful information about their child during handovers at the start and end of the day
To complete development reports, activity logs and complete appropriate paperwork under the general direction of your supervisor/line manager
To be willing to take part in internal as well as external training to develop their understanding of the role and required skills
To participate in team meetings and provide feedback to the team regarding recent training
To understand and assist in the carrying out of regular evacuation drills in a manner that does not distress the children
To assist in the care of equipment and that unsafe resources are brought to the attention of a senior member of staff
To at all times act in the best interests of the children in their care and raise any concerns in this regard to a senior member of staff.
To at all times act in line with QMUL and Nursery Policy and guidance from Senior Staff including any additional duties which may be reasonably required of the post
Working Environment (knowledge of special working practices, breadth of management skill required, customer impact, responsibility, efficiency)
To work towards an full understanding of the development of babies and children up to the age of five years, and be able to advise parents and carers
To work in a manner that develops a culture of understanding and respect that allows staff, parents, carers, and children equality of opportunity
To help make sure the nursery is a safe and stimulating environment and raise any issues to Senior staff
Respond to simple parental concerns passing on more complex ones to Senior staff

Plan own work to ensure it is up to desired standards
Communication & Networking (liaison with others, type and level of communications)
To communicate to parents regarding their child’s progress
Raise any concerns about the practice of others and the welfare of children with Senior staff
To attend all meetings as deemed appropriate by the Nursery Manager
Act on developments regarding policy and procedure immediately
Finance/Resource Management(budgeting, forecasting)
Highlight any need for new resources to Senior staff
People Management(supervisory responsibility, human relations skills)
