As the Summative Activity for Our Unit on Satire, You and Your Group Will Create/Present

AP 12 Satire Project

As the summative activity for our unit on satire, you and your group will create/present either an originalsatire or a topical, multi-media portfolio of satire criticizing a specific topic. You will present these satires or collections to the class. In your project/presentation, you will want to:

Determine a clear target for the satire (or portfolio) – a social or political issue you consider worthy of ridicule,

Consider who the speaker of the satire is and present your original satire as the speakerOR determine who the speakers are in the collection of satires you choose,

Consider what satire techniques are used and explain your rationale for why you used these techniques (or why they were used),

Choose how you will deliver the original satire(or which various methods of satire you will include in the portfolio) and explain how the method of delivery aides in the satire (you will explain this in your rationale paragraph),

Select appropriate words, visuals, and techniques that will get the desired response from your target audience (or analyze the words, visuals, and techniques used in the satire for their effectiveness in getting a response – your interpretation of the effectiveness),

Create asatire (video or written) that criticizes an appropriate, non-school-related target, and offers a solution (whether explicit or implied) to the issueOR create your topical, multi-media portfolio about the issue that includes your analysis, and

Present the satireor portfolio to us.

As you or your group presents the satire to the class, we will evaluate thesatire for its effectiveness and will be looking for the following without you telling them. While planning your rationale, you must include the following information:

Who your critical target is and why you find foible with them (is it justified?),

The type of satire techniques you used and how you used them,

The solution or desired change you want through the satire,

The effectiveness of the satire.

Students making a video can have a group of up to five people. All other work is individual.

Learning Goals for this project... Student will:

1. Select from a variety of satire techniquesand styles of delivery and, in written rationale paragraph for your satire, explain how they are effective for your satireOR explain the satirical techniques that are most appropriate for your topic and why you think they would work.

Assessment: Rationale Paragraph – the plan.

1. Create a satire (video or written) of an aspect of society you find worthy of ridicule and use quality production values appropriate for the style of the satire to deliver the critique. It needs to include an annotated script explaining why filming choices and satirical techniques are appropriate for the delivery or an annotated copy of your original written satire explaining your techniques…

OR create a portfolio (with 7-10 examples) centered around a specific topic that includes a variety of well-chosen examples of satirical sources on your topic (we will look at breadth as well as depth of your study).

Assessment: The satire or the portfolio.

1. Present an original satire using appropriate language in regards to speaker-audience-purposeOR present your portfolio to the class demonstrating your knowledge of satire.

Assessment: Oral presentation – the satire.

Some Helpful Tips!

Remember to speak clearly and articulately and loudly.

PLAN your satire or portfolio presentation. Effective presentations are planned, thoughtful, and practiced. Get together with your group for this. You will get some time in class, but you may need more time for it.

Eye Contact is essential. Don’t hide behind your visuals, videos, posters, etc.

Avoid mumbling, giggling, “um” and “you know” and “like.”

Be Confident! You are targeting something you find wrong with society. Don’t choose something you feel apathetic towards.

Remember: ALL group members must participate in the presentation.
