Purpose: to develop a logical 4-page, academic argument that proposes the significance of hosting a particular TED Talk speaker whose ideas you believe are vital for our college’s Distinguished Speaker Series.

Situation:All 1,000+ first-year students are writing proposals to bring a speaker to our campus. Write a sincere and cogently argued proposal letter to the college president, Donald Christian and the DSS Committee regarding why out of all the other proposed TED speakers, yours presents a current issue that is important to you and other students on our campus (perhaps even specific groups like first-year students, or the larger community for universal or local reasons). To effectively argue this you must thoroughly comprehend the TED Talk author’s main claim, and be able to discuss it analytically (moving beyond a surface summary of points).

Style: formal tone; your language should be precise and concise. Avoid clichés and logical fallacies.

Audience: Distinguished Speaker Series Committee/President Christian

Essential Information: Refer to the author/presenter’s website, and the Distinguished Speaker Series page (to check proposal guidelines, and to be sure you don’t suggest a speaker or topic too similar to recent ones, to determine common corporations that co-sponsor these events, etc.). Consider reading and citing the work from which the talk is excerpted or into which is has been published (if applicable), or other articles by this author on the subject to enhance your knowledge of his or her research.

*Cite speaking and travel fees for your speaker as any proposal must outline a tentative budget; you may have to contact an agent to determine this. *What other departments, campus organizations, or student groups might be interested in co-sponsoring or helping to publicize/create fliers for this event? This should also be in your proposal.

Library Research:scholarly print and database library sources on the larger topic of the talk; a minimum of 3 outside credible sources (no more than 5 total including the video/transcript of the talk) that address the following: background or key terms; supporting/main points; alternative perspectives (counter-argument or rebuttal)—directly but briefly quote from this source.

Remember: to refer the writing handbook; to create a limited/focused thesis so you can address specifics in this brief essay; incorporate Reasons, Examples, Names, Numbers, and the Senses.See A Little Argument on writing proposals for further guidance and examples.

Consider the following regarding argumentation:
-Creating common ground (invitational rhetoric as in Rogerian Argument)

-Acknowledging rebuttals or counter-arguments, then logically and respectfully discussing or illustrating why your proposal is still the most sound/effective/beneficial to many

-Including relevant (and balanced) elements of logos, pathos, and ethos

-Integrating credible research to support your claims ( plus 1 source for the rebuttal); you must have a total of 3-5 citations in MLA format
-Applying the elements of the Classical Argument model to help you organize your points; see the handbook and attached document.

Evaluation and Procedures:

MLA format, grammar, and mechanics will count for this paper(I will not be line editing for you); if these elements are not correct, the final grade will decrease one full letter grade. If sources are plagiarized (not cited at all or properly, not paraphrased accurately in the final paper) the essay will earn an F.
