Course Description:

Introduction to structural drawing for building construction and includes load analysis, concrete with steel detail drawings and wood frame design. Project drawings to be done with AutoCAD. Emphasis on floor and roof framing, lintels and beams, posts and columns. Goal is to develop a sense and basic understanding of wood framed structures in residential building construction.

Pre-requisite:

AEC 120-Introduction to Construction Drawings

AEC 110C-Basic AutoCAD II

AEC 118- Construction Materials

Co-requisites:

AEC 130-Residential Working Drawings, or prior completion.

AEC 131-Construction Codes, or prior completion

Course Objectives:

1.  To introduce the students to the effects of loads on building components.

2.  To introduce students to the tributary area method of calculating loads in wood frame construction.

3.  To introduce students to pre-engineered truss systems and manufacturing.

4.  To reinforce knowledge of cast-in-place concrete slab-on-grade, footing design and details.

5. To apply building code requirements to the different applications.

Course Content:

1.  General structural theories

2.  Tributary area method and calculations
