GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

In some cases, the IRS considers tuition remission to be a taxable benefit. If you have any questions regarding this, please call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or New EnglandCollege’s Student Financial Services at 603-428-2226.

Application for Tuition Remission should be submitted after pre-registering for courses. A Tuition Remission form must be submitted prior to the beginning of classes each semesterfor categories 1, 2, 3, and 6. Categories 4, 5, and 7 require submission of a Tuition Remission form only the first time a student takes a course at New EnglandCollege. Students are urged to submit forms early to avoid the normal registration rush. Tuition remission benefits are not available for those study abroad programs that require payment for tuition and fees from New EnglandCollege to be made to the study abroad institution. The College reserves the right to cancel a course at its discretion. Students cannot receive full tuition remission and institutional grants; students will not be awarded more than the cost of tuition.

Employees, Spouses and Dependents

(Categories 1 and 2): Please refer to the College Handbook for Faculty and Staff for current information regarding Tuition Remission and any other educational benefits that may be available. A Tuition Remission form is required for every semester in which courses are taken. Spouse and dependent benefits are limited to undergraduate courses. Employee must provide a signed and notarized copy of their most recent federal tax return in order to receive this benefit for dependents.

Chartwells Employees

(Category 3): Full-time employees of Chartwells Educational Dining Servicesare eligible for limited undergraduate tuition benefits for themselves and their spouses. Tuition Remission covers courses on a space-available basis after one year of full-time service at New EnglandCollege. A Tuition Remission form, as well as the appropriate registration form, is required for every semester in which courses are taken. The IRS may consider this benefit taxable for Chartwells employees who are not candidates for a degree. Further information regarding Tuition Remission benefits for this category may be obtained from the NEC Benefits Coordinator.

High School Graduates

(Categories 4 and 5): Graduates of John Stark Regional High School may take undergraduate courses at one-half the tuition rate in effect through the age of twenty-three. Graduates of Hillsboro-DeeringHigh School, HopkintonHigh School, and KearsargeRegionalHigh School may receive up to a maximum of $5,000 per academic year award. This benefit extends to home-schooled students; the amount of the benefit will be governed by the student’s resident high school policy. The student must pay all other required fees. A copy of your high school diploma or state certificate is required to verify graduation. A Tuition Remission form is required the first time a course is taken. Thereafter, Tuition Remission forms are not required. The IRS may consider this benefit taxable for high school graduates who are not candidates for a degree.

High School Seniors

(Category 6): Seniors at JohnStarkRegionalHigh School, Hillsboro-DeeringHigh School, HopkintonHigh School, and KearsargeRegionalHigh School may take a maximum of two undergraduate courses per semester on a space available, tuition-free basis. The high school principal or guidance director must give approval. A Tuition Remission form, as well as the appropriate registration form, and a copy of the student’s current high school transcript are required for every semester in which courses are taken. The student must pay all other required fees.

60+

(Category 7): Henniker residents who are 60 years of age or older may audit courses free of tuition charges. Students are required to provide proof of age. A completed Tuition Remission form is required for the first semester in which courses are taken. Thereafter, no Tuition Remission forms are required, but a Special Student form must be submitted. The IRS may consider this benefit taxable for Henniker residents 60 years of age or older who are not candidates for a degree.
