Apartheid Project (Major Grade)

Introduction

Apartheid is a social system that discriminates between races based on the beliefs of superiority. Once South Africa was colonialized by the Dutch and the British in the late 1600 and 1700s, the apartheid system was instated to seize control of the diamond mines that were discovered in South Africa. Eventually, the apartheid system would be the basis of the South African government starting in the 1940s. The apartheid system categorized the citizens into three categories: White, Colored, Black. All non-whites were required to wear an identification passport when crossing into white only areas in South Africa. All non whites were forced to slum like towns in extremely harsh conditions. Apartheid affected all parts of life including jobs, marriage, and education. If a anyone protested against the government, the consequences would result in fines, prison time, banishment from the country or death. Apartheid would end in 1994 with the leadership of Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela is considered a leader in freedom to the South African people after he was elected the first president under the free democratic government.
