Job Title: Shelter Manager

Reports to: Board of Directors

Directly Supervises: Shelter staff and volunteers

Vision: The AHA-SV thrives to bestow upon its’ patrons top notch customer service; all animals with the best possible care our resources permit; to perform daily in an effective and efficient manner and to provide a pleasurable work environment rich in practical learning and team work.

Purpose of Position: The Shelter Manager is responsible for the daily operations of the AHA-SV facility, internal systems, policies and procedures, animal management and the staff. The Shelter Manager provides leadership, oversight and long range planning to ensure that all areas are operating as best as possible given the resources.

Schedule:

40 hours per week with some nights and weekends required

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Desire to interact positively with public
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work well in a variable environment and multi-task
  • Excellent computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel and Quickbooks
  • Knowledge in proper animal sheltering policies and desire to continually learn and improve management strategies
  • Knowledge of basic medical procedures; vaccinations, wound care, ability to identify and address medical concerns with veterinarian
  • Knowledge of cat and dog behavior
  • Basic understanding of cat and dog behavior modification, training and management

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the supervising, scheduling and training of animal welfare staff, providing feedback and addressing employee problems or grievances.
  • Monitors safety compliance for staff and volunteers.
  • Maintains shelter records and statistics that include, but are not limited to: animal intake, adoption, spay/neuter
  • Maintains operating income/expenses
  • Monthly report to Board of Directors of shelter stats/operations/shelter news; policy, personnel, intake/adoptions, budget, donations, recommendations, etc.
  • Regularly meets attends Board Meetings
  • Maintains and nurtures relationships with donors
  • Oversees the ordering and inventory of shelter supplies and equipment
  • Assists shelter staff with animal intakes and reclaimed animals. May have to assist in rescue operations and/or animal cruelty investigations
  • Responsible for monitoring and implementing general care and maintenance of animals including feeding, cleaning, disinfecting, grooming, vaccinating, medicating, behavior/temperament evaluations, foster home placement
  • In partnership with veterinarians to enforce all policies and procedures to protect the health and well-being of animals in our care
  • Leads staff discussions regarding placement decisions, behavior/training plans, ideas to improve animal care/provide enrichment, enhance the customer service experience and the organization in general
  • Work with shelter trainer to ensure consistent training/behavior plans
  • Oversees intakes and adoptions and ensures that the public receives accurate information and excellent customer service.
  • Responsible to ensure the upkeep/cleaning and maintenance of facility and to assist Board of Directors with capital improvements.
  • Works with Board of Directors to prepare with the annual budget and closely monitors income and expense throughout the year
  • Set standards of conduct of shelter employees to ensure that humane philosophy is implemented in care of animals and projected to the public
  • Review shelter practices, as well as procedures to ensure efficient economical use of resources
  • Maintains website/social media/newsletters/marketing to ensure accurate and professional PR
  • Regularly updates Petfinder.com to reflect current adoptable animals and provides accurate descriptions and clear photos
  • Assist Board of Directors with developing, organizing and implementing fundraising events
  • Organize and implement adoption events and field operations and outreach/education opportunities
  • Carries out other duties assigned by Board of Directors
