ANCHOR WORK –UNIT TWO

You must complete 3 of the following assignments over the course of the unit for one test grade.

INTRAPERSONAL
Based on “Danny Deever” in the textbook, do you believe the government was right in its decision? Agree or disagree. (3 paragraph minimum)
ELACC9-10SL3 / VISUAL/SPATIAL
Write a “concrete poem” about a particular social justice where the meaning of the poem relates to the shape of the poem. The purpose of your poem is to inform the reader. (50 words minimum)
ELACC9-10W2 / BODILY/KINESTHETIC
Create 2 “found poems” using the titles of literary works. You must use a minimum of 4 titles per poem. Provide photos of your poems along with 2 sentences each of commentary explaining the meaning of your poems.

LOGICAL/MATHEMATICAL
Divide your life into three sections (example: ages 1-4, ages 5-7, etc; or places you have lived; or hobbies you enjoyed). Assign each section a symbol, a color, a theme song, a shape, a number, a letter, and season and explain your choices. Think abstractly and synaesthetically (look this word up!).
ELACC9-10W10 / FREE SPACE
Create a useless product (example: ankle warmers, outdoor air freshener) and write a script for a commercial that will make use of euphemisms and exaggerated or distorted evidence in order to sell the product.
ELACC9-10SL3 / MUSICAL
Look up a (clean) joke online or either pull one from your memory. Turn the joke and its punch line into a 4 line poem written in iambic tetrameter or iambic trimeter.

NATURALIST
Review the nature chapters from Ecology. Which chapters are most compelling for the reader? How does Ray persuade her readers about the importance of the natural world? How is the natural world a character in the book? (3 paragraphs)
ELACC9-10RI3 / INTERPERSONAL
Provide an objective 1 paragraph summary regarding Woolf’s ideas about Shakespeare’s sister. Write an accompanying poem pretending that you are Shakespeare’s sister addressing modern women written from her point of view. Keep your tone serious but hopeful. (12 lines minimum)

ELACC9-10SL6 / VERBAL/LINGUISTIC
Watch Alice Walker read Sojourner Truth’s piece, “Ain’t I a Woman” on You Tube. How does Walker’s reading enhance the speech? How do her strategically placed pauses and inflections affect the viewer? How does Sojourner Truth’s dialect affect her message in the original piece? Would translating her speech to more formal English enhance or detract from her message? (Two paragraphs)
