African Internship & Volunteer Opportunities

African Internship & Volunteer Opportunities:

General Databases:

South Africa:

Going Global: Accessed via the Middlebury only resources of the Career Services website. It offers information on both jobs and internships by country, including links to resources on South Africa.

This would be a valuable first step for students interested in working in South Africa, in addition to job listings it also has general career advice for how to approach and apply for jobs and internship within the Region. This site will be most helpful for students looking at the possibility of working long term in Africa or hoping to intern with an African company or organization rather than an international group.

Students can also search by city (within the US or Canada) or by company or industry.

Internabroad.com: by accessing the South Africa portion of the site students can search a list of over 100 internships on a variety of topics.

For a complete list of internship opportunities see:

Volunteerabroad.com: by accessing the South Africa portion students can search a list of over 300 volunteer opportunities with a wide variety of organizations.

For a complete list of volunteer opportunities see:

US Internship Databases

Internships-USA: Offers an extensive database of internships based both within the US and working internationally. A comprehensive list of internships can be accessed through the link to internship series online. Internships are listed by category and descriptions are given both of the nature of the internship and the requirements for applications.

This site would be most useful for students looking for internships within a specific field of study. Once they select this field, internships are listed by location.

Internships.com: A more general internship database which requires students to create a login before they begin searching. Instructions for how to create a profile are available via the Middlebury only section of the CSO website.

General Resources:

These are more general career/volunteer databases with a high concentration of jobs that focus on Africa related issues. They list opportunities both in Africa and opportunities based within the United States.

Idealist.org: This online database is run by Action Without Borders and offers information about a wide variety of career, internship, and volunteer opportunities motivated towards the common good.

The database can be found here:

Africa South of the Sahara: While the main focus of this site isn’t to offer internship or volunteer opportunities abroad, it does provide a list of links to other organizations with programs in or related to Africa.

Internship opportunities can be found at:

National Consortium for Study in Africa: Based out of Michigan State University, this site provides a list of organizations working in Africa along with some general resources on finding and applying for internships abroad.

Specific Internships/Volunteer Opportunities:

US Based:

Somali Bantu Community Association of Vermont: A traditionally subjugated and oppressed Muslim and cultural group in Africa, the Somali Bantu community have had limited access to formal education and the job market in the U.S. and at home. The Somali Bantu Community Association of Vermont is a unique, self-sustainable organization "for the community, by the community," which aims to improve the lives of Somali refugees in Vermont through a variety of programs: English classes, women's leadership, youth recreation, community support etc. Middlebury College students will assist the SBCAVT in the ESL program every Saturday from 12pm-2pm in a teaching assistant capacity. ESL experience is not required because many of the Somali adults are pre-literate. We only have two major requirements:

* Be COMMITTED to volunteering in Winooski (near Burlington) at least two Saturdays a month.

* Be extremely FLEXIBLE, patient and willing to help in whatever way you can.

IMPORTANT: We are particularly in need of volunteer drivers or those who have College licenses for cars/7-passenger vans. The current arrangement is that we will take the bus to Burlington at 9:50 am on Saturday, be picked up around 11:45 am to travel to Winooski and return to Middlebury on the 5:00 pm bus. This will change once we recruit enough drivers. Contact Shen at if interested, and please visit
