Preceptorial Advising Days forSpring 2017: Tuesday, March 27 (Juniors and Seniors); Wednesday, April 4(Freshman and Sophomores. You may also call for an appointment surrounding those days. We take walk-ins only on precepting days. If you walk-in you are encouraged to arrive early in the day.

My role as your preceptor is to facilitate your progress through college, as both a resource person and teacher. Together, I hope that we can set goals for your academic and future professional life. My goal is that you will grow academically and assume responsibility for constructing your own education. My hope is that our relationship will be characterized by mutual respect and trust. Through the various types of courses required of you, we hope that Stockton is preparing you for a lifetime of learning.

Ultimately, you are the person responsible for your course selections and completion of necessary requirements for graduation.

As your preceptor I am responsible to:

  • Effectively communicate the requirements, policies and procedures of the college
  • Provide referrals to appropriate resources on campus
  • Help you understand the goals and purposes of a liberal arts education, coaching you through the creation of your education and helping you see connections between courses in the curriculum.
  • Be available to assist you in developingeducational and career goals.

As my preceptee, you are responsible for:

  • Scheduling an advising appointment at least once per semester. Please arrive on time and prepared with questions and appropriate materials, including your CAPP or Degree Works evaluation.
  • Creatingan overall plan that incorporates your educational and career goals.
  • Completing graduation requirements, asking questions about requirements or policies you do not understand.
  • Investigating extracurricular activities, internship, and study abroad activities that could enhance your educational experience.

Learning Objectives: As a result of our advising sessions you should be able to:

  1. Locate information about college policies, including dates for drop/add, pre-registration, last day to drop a class, final exams, and application for graduation.
  2. Develop accurate expectations of the time and effort needed to maintain good academic standing and succeed as a college student, and develop a timeline for graduation.
  3. Become familiar with college resources, including CareerCenter, Student Records, Student Development offices, and Academic Advising.
  4. Get to know several faculty members on campus. (They will assist with recommendations!)
  5. Access and run your online degree audit (CAPP or Degree Works), and be able to interpret the information about progress to your degree.
  6. Explainall General Studies requirements at Stockton and describe why general education courses are an important part of your educational experience.
  7. Identify the program and cognate requirements for your choice of major; be able to describe the nature of the discipline of your chosen major.
  8. Understand the importance of including experiences outside the classroom such as internships, study abroad, service learning, and student clubs and activities.
  9. Articulate several graduate school possibilities for your intended major, working towards a grade point average that is sufficient for entrance into those programs.
  10. Identify several career choices for your choice of major.Develop a résumé and have Career Services help you refine it. Have a plan for pursuing your first job past Stockton and for other life goals.
