Actuarial Science Club Newsletter

First Issue

Hi everyone,

I’m Maive Morgan, a junior in the Actuarial Science program here at Penn State and one of the two junior liaisons for the Actuarial Science Club. Some of the other officers, our advisor Ron, and myself thought that perhaps a newsletter would be a good idea to keep you all updated with things going on with Actuarial Science and all of our fellow students here in Penn State’s program. This issue is the first of many to come!

Also, I would like to wish everyone good luck on their upcoming finals. Try not to stress too hard, and I hope everyone has a great winter break.

New Website

Make sure you check out the club’s new website! Diana Gross, our very talented web developer, has spent a great amount of time working on the new layout and has done an amazing job with it. In case you are not familiar with the website, here is the web address:

Thank you Diana for all of your hard work.

A Word From Our President

It is hard to believe that the fall semester has finally come to an end. The Actuarial Science Club has seen unprecedented changes this semester: the transition to a new actuarial professor and club advisor, expansion of club involvement and a new website mark some of the major changes. This transition will continue with a new President in the spring, Matt Fishel.

In the midst of these changes, the Actuarial Science Club has seen unparalleled growth this academic year in multiple ways. First, the major has grown in students to the largest it has even been at PennState: 231 people currently declare Actuarial Science as their major. Second, the 2008 Career Fair was a tremendous success, with the highest employer and student turnout since the inception of the event in 2005. Finally, exam study sessions this fall have helped more people than ever pass Exam P and FM.

Not only has the Actuarial Science Club changed and grown, but the students in the major are interacting more than ever. An increased number of socials has created a greater sense of camaraderie among majors and has helped students at all levels interact on a more frequent basis. Additionally, new officer positions on the Actuarial Science Club Executive Board give Juniors a greater voice in the services offered to students as well as help the Junior Class stay more involved in all that the major and club have to offer.

Thank you to all the officers and members for a great semester! I feel truly privileged to have held this position and I know the Actuarial Science Club will continue its success in coming semesters! Although I will be graduating in a few short weeks, I look forward to the emails I will get updating me on all the additional advancements you all will make in the coming years. Best of luck to all of you in your future endeavors and hopefully I will see all of you at the 2009 Career Fair!

Exams and Internships

We are fortunate to have many students here at Penn State who have passed exams and who have been offered internships. To recognize all of our successes, we have compiled a list. The list is also on the website.

If you are not on the list, make sure you email Ron () so we can add you to the list—the more successes we have, the better it looks for the Actuarial Science program at Penn State and for all of us who are part of it. Note that he is interested in knowing if you have an offer, even if you have not accepted it yet. When you accept the internship or job, he’ll let us know for the newsletter and the website.
