Happy 2018 to everyone!

We hope you all had a relaxing holiday break and were warm and safe during yesterday’s storm. The New Year brings the 2018 American Printing House for the Blind (APH) Annual Census of Students which begins on the first Monday each calendar year. As you know, the APH Census allows the State of Massachusetts to participate in the Federal "Act to Promote the Education of the Blind.” The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE)directsthe AIM Library to conduct the Census for our state. The registration status of all students is reviewed annually. APH administers the federal quota allocation appropriated by Congress for the production of specialized instructional materials to be used by students who are legally blind. The appropriated amount is divided into each state according to the number of students who are legally blind reported in this annual registration. Materials ordered with Federal Quota dollars are the property of the State of Massachusetts and must be returned to the AIM Library after the student is finished using them.

Student reports due February 16, 2018.

Signed Consent for 2018: Due to FERPA and HIPAA requirements, it is mandatory that AIM Library has on file signed consent by parents or guardians to share confidential student information. Without this consent, the student cannot be registered and the district will not be able to request any materials through the AIM Library.

Please report every student you are currently servicing, even if he/she is not legally blind. The AIM Library reports to DESE the number of blind and visually impaired students being serviced in Massachusetts. This information facilitates local, regional, statewide, and national planning, and service development. SASID numbers are required. If the student is not LB, put N under legally blind and leave the acuity code space blank.

Please review attached list of accepted Reporting Codes. Only those codes can be used.

SN~ NEW CODE for 2018 Symbolic/Non-readers: APH has changed the Non-reader option to Symbolic/Non-readers (SN). The definition has not change: Non-reading students; students not working on or toward a readiness level; students who do not demonstrate traditional print or Braille reading potential (symbolic readers)

Use as many forms as you need to completely report your caseload and please use a separate form to report students attending private school (i.e. do not report public and private on same form).

DEADLINE February 16, 2018~ Students Reports must be-mailed, faxed or snail mailed to the AIM library. Remember to save a copy for your records. This information may also be found on our website at not reporting your caseload by the deadline you are directly responsible for the ineligibility of your students for APH Materials.
