944 Carry out a Pre-Delivery Check, Rectify Defects, and Complete the Service on a Motorcycle

3Definitions

Company requirements refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include but are not limited to – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer specifications, product quality specifications, and legislative requirements.

Service information may include but is not limited to – technical information of a vehicle, machine, or product detailing operation; installation and servicing procedures; manufacturer instructions and specifications; technical terms and descriptions; and detailed illustrations. This can be accessed in hard copy or electronic format and is normally sourced from the manufacturer.

Suitable tools and equipment means industry approved tools and equipment that are recognised within the industry as being the most suited to complete the task in a professional and competent manner with due regard to safe working practices.

4For this unit standard, it is essential that the practical assessment evidence is obtained in the workplace under normal workplace conditions.

5A pre-delivery inspection must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer pre-delivery check sheet and any manufacturer special instructions; otherwise the warranty may be void. Assessment must therefore be carried out in adherence to those instructions.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Carry out a pre-delivery check on a motorcycle.

Performance criteria

1.1Safe working practices are observed throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety, safety of others, motorcycle safety, workshop safety, environmental safety, tools and equipment safety.

1.2Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used to enable the check to be carried out in accordance with service information.

1.3Battery is checked for charge and security in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.4Lights are checked for operation and adjustment in accordance with legislative requirements, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

Rangeheadlight(s), tail and stop light, indicators, instrument panel.

1.5Clutch is checked for operation in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.6Brakes are checked for operation, and controls are checked for adjustment and lubrication, to ensure compliance with legislative requirements, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.7Indirect cooling system is checked for security and leaks in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.8Drive and suspension are checked for set-up adjustment and lubrication, and the wheel nuts, sprockets, and joints are checked for security in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.9Tyres are checked in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.10Forks are checked for pressure and fluid level in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.11Choke and throttle are checked for freedom of movement, and controls are checked for adjustment and lubrication, in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

1.12All bolts and fasteners are checked for correct torque setting, and locking devices are in place, in accordance with service information, and any defects identified and noted on the pre-delivery check list.

Outcome 2

Rectify any defects from the pre-delivery check, and complete the service.

Performance criteria

2.1Safe working practices are observed throughout the task in accordance with legislative requirements.

Rangepersonal safety, safety of others, motorcycle safety, workshop safety, environmental safety, tools and equipment safety.

2.2Suitable tools and equipment are selected and used to enable defects to be rectified and the service completed in accordance with service information.

2.3Engine and transmission lubrication system is filled with oil in accordance with service information.

2.4Fuel tank is replenished with clean fuel of the manufacturer’s recommended grade, and any fuel system leaks are identified and rectified in accordance with service information.

2.5Hydraulic brake system(s) is filled with brake fluid in accordance with service information, and no air exists in the system.

2.6Cooling system is filled to the specified level with the specified coolant in accordance with service information. Hoses are checked for tightness, and any system leaks are rectified in accordance with service information.

2.7Faults found during the pre-delivery check are rectified in accordance with service information.

2.8The engine is started and warmed up, and the idle speed and mixture are adjusted in accordance with service information.

2.9The motorcycle is operated in accordance with the Road Code to test its operation at speeds up to and including the open road limit.

Rangeengine performance, clutch and transmission performance, brake operation, steering and handling, operation of meters and gauges.

2.10The motorcycle is checked after the road test for fuel, oil, and coolant leaks, and any necessary rectifications are made in accordance with service information.

2.11The machine’s service record is completed once the service is completed in accordance with company requirements.
