CLASS SYLLABUS

Class expectations

This is a grammar and vocabulary based class. The student will be expected to read, write, and speak in Spanish. If a student does not want to respond in Spanish, he/she should not take this class. This is an advanced level Spanish class and will be taught at an advanced pace. The intent of this class is to speak, read, and write in Spanish. This class will not be taught completely in Spanish – it is not an immersion class. Upon completion of this class a student will be eligible to take Spanish 2 at the high school. The student must maintain a B average for both semesters in order to enroll in Spanish 2.

Bring paper (spiral notebook, 3-ring notebook) and a pen/pencil to class with you every day.

Late Work Policy

All work is due on the assigned day. If you are absent, district policy for late work will be followed. If your work is not complete on the due date, you are still responsible for that work and will not be allowed to take the assessment until all late work is in.

Grades

Grades for this class will be comprised of scores on homework, quizzes, tests, pronunciation (during speaking tests) and an occasional project. The grades will be a weighted grade with 10% of the grade coming from their homework scores and 90% from their quiz, test, project and pronunciation scores. The grading scale is as follows:

90 - 100 A

80 - 89B

70 - 79 C

60 -69 D

0 - 59 F

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • find out and give the date
  • ask and tell the time
  • discuss the seasons and weather
  • talk about families and pets
  • describe a house or apartment
  • describe rooms and some furnishings
  • be able to properly use the verb TENER
  • be able to properly use possessive adjectives
  • talk about what you do in school
  • identify some school clothes and school supplies
  • talk about what you and your friends do after school
  • correctly conjugate –AR verbs
  • properly use the verbs IR, DAR, and ESTAR and their forms
  • understand the contractions al and del
  • identify foods and discuss meals
  • talk about places where your eat
  • order food or a beverage at a café
  • correctly conjugate –ER and –IR verbs
  • use expressions that use ir a, tener que, acabar de
  • talk about sports
  • describe a soccer uniform
  • identify colors
  • correctly conjugate stem-changing verbs
  • use the verbs interesar, gustar, and aburrir correctly
  • describe people’s personality, conditions, and emotions
  • understand the difference between the verbs ser and estar
