Course Description:The purpose of this course is to provide grade 7 students with an integrated language arts study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language for college and career preparation and readiness. Students will focus on collaboration, text analysis, and writing in response to reading.

Required Materials

To successfully complete this course, students will need to bring the following items to class on a daily basis.

  • AVID Binder
  • Planner
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Choice Reading Book (fiction and/or non-fiction)
  • Spiral Notebook (this may not be used as a source for loose leaf paper)

Items that are required, but not on a daily basis:

  • Flash Drive
  • Sticky Notes
  • Highlighter (at least 2 different colors)
  • Loose Leaf Paper
  • Glue or Tape
  • Scissors

Texts:

Making Meaning Student Response Book
Choice Reading Book (self-selected from the library or brought from home)

Books

Students will be provided with workbooks. All of these text are provided by the school and need to be taken care of with great care.

Additionally, students will be provided an opportunity to frequently choose books from the school library and the classroom library. It is required that students have at leastone choice reading book with them in Language Arts at all times! Sometimes, a unit will require this book to be fiction or nonfiction, specifically. This book can also go home for nightly reading.

Students will be responsible for the care and return of the school and class library items. Students are permitted to have books out for a two week period. After that, the book is considered late and will begin incurring a fine. If a book is not returned from the class library, a replacement fee may be charged. Students may renew a checked out book by bringing in the book and checking it out again.

Students should also regularly read as many different non-fiction texts as possible. Some examples include:

-Newspapers- Biographies-Magazines

-Instructions/Recipes-Brochures-Manuals

Homework

The majority of the homework assigned for 7th Grade Language Arts will be reading at home, filling out a log, and obtaining a parent signature. Students will be expected to read something that they enjoy reading. In most cases, this will be the same book that they bring to class with them. When signing your child’s homework, please have a short conversation about what they read!

MAKE-UP/LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY

Make-Up Work (Absent- Excused)

1. Check with the teacher or the class website for missing assignment(s).
2. You will have 1 school day for each day absent to turn in make-up work.
3. Turn in your makeup work directly to the teacher.

Make-Up Work (Absent- Unexcused)

1. Check with the teacher or the class website for missing assignment(s).
2. You will have 1 school day for each day absent to turn in make-up work. You may receive up to a 50% reduction on classwork. Test and Quizzes can be made up for 100% credit.
3. Turn in your makeup work directly to the teacher.
Late/Missing Work

1. Check with the teacher or the class website for missing assignment(s).
2. 10 points will be taken from the grade for each class day it is late.
3. Turn in your late/missing work directly to the teacher.
Homework

No late homework will be accepted unless a student is absent.

Re-testing Policy

Students that receive lower than a C on an assessment may re-take the assessment within two weeks. Students must attend Stingray Success to receive extra help and fill in knowledge gaps in order to be eligible to re-take. Teacher discretion will be used on whether a students is ready to re-take the assessment.

Computers/iPads/Technology

Technology will be used in the classroom and in labs throughout the school year. Students are required to complete Digital Citizenship coursework at the throughout the school year. If a students is misusing technology, he/she may have the privilege of using technology revoked. The teacher will provide the students with a comparable activity to assess/practice skills.

A major infraction will skip directly to step 4 and the student will be referred to the Dean’s Office.
