Dear Parents,

Somerset ISD is pleased to offer students in grades K-6 the opportunity to enroll and participate in the Somerset After School Program. This new, locally developed program will replace the previous ACE program, which operated under a grant from Communities in Schools at Somerset Elementary, Barrera Veterans Elementary and Savannah Heights Intermediate in previous years.

The Somerset After School Program has been designed to provide our students with targeted interventions and enrichment opportunities. This program will be primarily dedicated to tutoring and homework assistance in math and literacy development. Additional enrichment activities that promote overall health and wellness will also be incorporated in the program, as appropriate.

This program will be offered at Somerset Elementary, Barrera Veterans Elementary and Savannah Heights Intermediate Schools for students in grades K-6th. It will operate from 2:45 p.m – 4:45 p.m. from Monday through Friday and will run concurrent with the SISD instructional calendar.

The first day of operation will be Monday, September 8, 2014.

Students may participate in the program in the following ways:

  • Students who are identified as meeting at risk criteria may attend the program at no cost.
  • Students who are not identified as at risk of failing may attend and pay $100.00 per month. Please note that families with more than one student attending the program (and who do not qualify as at risk) will need to pay $100.00 for each child.
  • Please note that campuses will need to verify at risk status of children for program participation after submission of required application

Light snacks will be provided for every day the program is in session. Transportation will be provided to students from Monday –Thursday. Transportation will not be provided by the district on Fridays.

An administrator will oversee this program, district-wide, and a Campus Coordinator will be hired at each campus, to ensure that staffing and appropriate planning is in place by the first day of operation.

We are pleased to be able to offer this program for our students and look forward to working with parents, staff and community members to ensure this program is a success. More information, to include the application process, will be communicated, as soon as it becomes available.

Sincerely,

Saul Hinojosa

Superintendent of Schools
